Beer In Ads #1013: There’s One Great Beer That Costs You Less

Tuesday’s ad is for Reading Premium Beer, from 1972. Reading Premium was my hometown beer, but closed in 1976, when I was a junior in high school, more’s the pity. This ad was just four years before they closed their doors, and it must have been an ad of desperation, trying to compete on price against seven brands far more established then they ever were. But at last they were still using my hands down favorite slogan of all time: “the friendly beer for modern people.”

Beer Birthday: Greg Hall

virtue goose-island
Today is the 48th birthday of Greg Hall, former brewmaster at Goose Island Brewing. Goose Island, of course, makes some incredible beers. Founded by Greg’s father John Hall in 1988, Greg became brewmaster a few years later and has been setting high standards ever since, though he left after the family business was acquired by ABI. His new venture is Virtue Cider. Join me in wishing Greg a very happy birthday.

Understanding Alcohol Consumption In England

Today’s infographic, in honor of Guy Fawkes Night, is entitled Understanding Alcohol Consumption in England, and was created by Money Expert. Unfortunately, a lot of it is based on England’s recommended “Alcohol Units,” which were shown to have been created completely arbitrarily a few years ago, yet continue to be used by the government and related health organizations.

Beer Birthday: Rob Widmer

widmer
Today is Rob Widmer’s 57th birthday. Rob is, of course, one of the bros in Widmer Brothers. He and his brother Kurt helped found the Oregon Brewers Festival, created the style American Hefeweizen and are one of the few small brewers that have managed to retain their spirit and reputation as they’ve grown much larger. Join me in wishing Rob a very happy birthday.
