Happy birthday, Stan! I have a crop of friends whose birthdays all fall between now and the end of the month, and as such, I've always considered it a good time to have been born. Glad to know you're in that august company.

I'll raise a toast to your good health--and good writing--tonight.

Happy Birthday, Stan! It's my Grannie's birthday as well. Although I believe she has more than a few years on you, she's pretty cool, too. ;-)

Many happy returns,

Lisa

Happy Birthday Stan,

Many thanks for all the inspiration over the years via your written words. My latest expedition into the world of caramelizing sugar (inspiration from "Brew Like a Monk") has got me in the middle of a 12% Abbey style Quad that is our 1000th batch and 12th anniversary beer all wrapped in one. Should be ready in a a couple months. Keep the faith, and here's to bigger bolder beers.
Cheers!!

Hi J,

Thanks, although you could have left out the age ;>)

Makes it more obvious why I spend time investigating what happens to our taste buds as we age. In theory you lose 20-60% by the time you are 60, though this is subject to some debate.

It matters to medical types because of the concern that as people age they may be inclined to eat sweeter foods (sugarey, not as good for you) as they look for more flavor.

I think the alternative is to seek out bigger and bolder - hoppier beers, spicier foods, etc.

So I spent the morning (home)brewing and this afternoon we roasted green chiles from the garden.

Must be time now for a beer. So your blog gets to be the official home of my birthday post because I'm not posting that way-too-long list above.

Prosit - Stan
