Good observation Jay, right on target. Sederer and Goplerud’s specious arguments, about beer causation flunks muster because of the fallacy of "Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc" - known in English as the assumption, "After this, therefore because of this."

This B.S. has been the root of many an evil and unwise law. In the Salem Witch trials, when someone became ill after encountering a woman who was alleged to be a witch, that chance encounter was taken as proof that the woman was in fact a witch. It is the sun sets because we turn the lights on argument, but with a meaner streak.

It is easy to demonize a liquid, versus accepting the responsibility of ones own actions. So these doctors would argue that a raise in the price of beer would actually decrease the amount of beer drunk? I don’t think so. It is quite more likely that a raise in the price of beer, due to taxation, would more than likely result in a decline in the rate at which people get routine physicals. Physician, heal thyself.

Maybe switching back to the red hot poker for fixing this disease is a viable solution. Seriously, what about raising the awareness of social responsibility would be better than attacking the beer.

I took serious offense to the statement that higher taxes would prevent pregnant women from drinking heavily... uh, excuse me!?!? Oh yeah, that extra penny will make all the difference in whether some idiot is poisoning her unborn child.

Very good article, calling for additional taxes on alcohol is a progressive idea that like prohibition is fraught with unattended consequences. The unfortunate thing is that scare tactics do work, unless resisted by sane and sometimes tongue in cheek commentary excess taxes and socialized medicine will be forced on us.

Funny, whenever I tell people I'd like to buy their daughters a drink I usually get punched in the face.
