A great trio of posts, Jay.

Sadly, I live in one of those states on the bottom right corner of the beer-tax map. Any coincidence that I can count on one hand, I think, the number of packaging breweries in my state?

As I see it, taxation at the state level only increases competition between states, fostering and developing concrete ideals for business developments. I think this article demonstrates this idea, and it's a good one. But, when a federal authority imposes a blanket tax across the states, there is no "petrie dish" (unique state tax situations) in which business can develop.

In your last post, you posted a map of the US illustrating state excise taxes. Were I to start a brewery, based off that map, I just might go to Missouri. I may not be alone. As a state, Missouri would rep the benefits, and demonstrate pragmatically to the rest of the nation the benefit of a low excise tax. This learning experience won't happen if the federal government usurps state autonomy.

Great post(s)!

When I lived in Oregon we would stock up on alcohol whenever we came back to California. A general rule of thumb was you could buy one size larger bottle of booze for the same price if you bought it in California. On trips to Portland we usually made a trip across the river to Washington for supplies as well. Other than that, we really avoided the hard stuff in favor of beer due to the high prices.
