UPDATE: Peter Licht is now brewing at the San Jose Tied House producing both seasonal beers for that brewery and house beers for Jupiter in Berkeley. Steve Donohue IS still with FireHouse, they should be opening their second location in early October.

I miss Farmhouse. Their saison was always on tap at the Lanesplitter in Oakland, and was a great summer beer. According to my memory, anything brewed by Coast Range or Farmhouse was a safe bet if you liked the style generally. I was amazed and saddened when I found out they had to close down.

Decorum no doubt prevented you from saying it, Jay, so I will: Simply, no brewed-to-style kolsch is going to be good after nine months in the bottle. Period. If it's drinkable, that's testament to the brewery, but "a crisp, fruity example of a traditional kolsch beer," never.

Further, his description of it as "a darker shade of gold" makes me think of the brassy colour associated with oxidization.

Having had more than a few Coast Range and Farmhouse offerings I recall none of them being bottle dated. None of this would be a problem if they were. This "dumping" of old beer into far reaching states is fairly common. I know for a fact us East Coasters received a load of undated and "blech" Speakeasy beers years back...then they disappeared rapidly. Now they're back again? Yawn.

Date all beer.
Case closed.

BTW, is the old Coast Range brewer Steve _? still at Firehouse?

Cheers!

Great comments Jay.The guy who owned Coast Range probably unloaded the stock to some kind of bottom feeder before he filed for bankruptcy. Or perhaps they were disposed of by the bankruptcy court. As you know, Coast Range had a long list of creditors; even the supplier of their bottles was in line. Sad to see it go. Perer Licht did great work there and the Farmhouse idea was super.

Jay, Dave's right. As a former J-school guy I appreciate a pithy headline. The tabloids will be knocking at your door if you keep that up.
