I can't be nearly as cautiously optimistic that the budget will change for a simple reason, no divided government. With it all one party they will only increase the debt as is the modern example of anytime when the President and Congress are of the same party. Otherwise I don't let it bother me or preoccupy my time, I have beer to drink, things to write, and good times to be had.

I will eschew the blatantly political rants that were the main negative feature of '08.

Instead, simply comment on '08 as a great beer year for me. In it I homebrewed 15 6-gallon batches of beer, including lagers, Belgian golds, pale ales, IPA's and imperial stouts; most were very good and few outstanding. Hops and malts were a bit expensive, but well worth it for the fun of homebrewing and the pleasure of sharing homebrew with friends. I was particularly pleased with the a Belgian Golden Ale made to replicate Leffe [I know geeks disdain it but I enjoy it]; it surpassed Leffe mightily! '08 also found me enjoying the best of San Diego's IPAs, which I believe are the best in the world, and Seattle's rich beer culture. SO, FOR ME '08 WAS GREAT!

For '09 I'm hoping to brew some more wonderful beers and I'm looking forward to the Bistro Double IPA Festival and the American Hombrewers convention in Oakland. I'm hoping hop prices ameliorate a bit and that the IPA brewers have plenty of hops to continue abundantly hopping their IPAs and DIPAs. Oh, yes and that my Nugget and Golding plants bring forth an abundant harvest this year!
