I am really appalled at the puritanical ides that some people have, especially some who purport to promote craft beers. My daughter (who is 8) goes to the occasional beer festival, and loves going down to our local pub. Why can't children be part of your family outing, no matter where you go. Don't you think that it is healthy to give them an environment where alcohol can be consumed in an adult fashion? We have traveled to Ireland on many occasions, and the pubs there are the town gathering places. Families are in them all the time. Teach them responsibility with alcohol at a young age and they will likely practice it when they are older.

For more entertaining reading from the filth pig that is Ms. Alstrom, see below. The woman is truly out of control. Must be "all" that money she's making.

Nice write up.
Those charming quotes are from Candice Alstrrom, wife of one of the "Beer Advocate" brothers in chief. Sadly her ill informed, insular and incoherent ramblings are the new voice of Beer Advocate. Pity

Sad to see Big Brother changing the way this festival had been run for years. Let the organizers decide who can attend, not government.

And it is almost more sad to see a representative of a once-great website like BeerAdvocate.com spout off such caustic vitriol. Upon further research, it seems this "cfahooligan" has quite a history of corrosive response and sophomoric debate. It is unfortunate to see her as an up-and-coming driving force on that website. She seems quite the lady, and quite the mouthpiece for a website quickly going downhill.

Finally, this quote from her is priceless: "Thanks to those who blogged about me in their lame blogs about beer. Supposedly industry professionals." Jay, will you continue to contribute to their magazine or will you just limit yourself to your "lame" blog? With her around, I would have nothing to do with their operation from now on. Classless.

I myself have no children but agree that there is nothing wrong with children attending an outdoor beer festival as long as the parent or guardian accepts the responsibility of watching over them. A beer festival can be a fine family activity, when I was in Germany I saw kids in bars at Stamtisch tables but the key is parentall responsibility.

For those who aren't aware, Candice from Beer Advocate spouts off like this all of the time with namecalling . She is not a positive person to be a spokesmane for any site that claims they advocate better beer.

Thank you! Beer is the daily bread of the world's alcoholic beverages, and who better to enjoy your daily bread with than one's family?

I thought these neo-puritan folk in the states also tend to those who believe in 'family values' and that parents (rather than the state) know best what's good for their kids? Hmmm...

The mind is boggled by members of a supposed advocacy site—the founders no less—espousing a "beer ought to be segregated and kept completely separate from all those hippy families!"

I'll stick with the "beer and families can mix" ideology that has served so many parents so well.

The woman you speak of happens to be Todd Alstrom's (co-founder of Beer Adfvocate) wife. In fact, Todd himself also defended her stating she was being "constructive". That's love, man.

Glad to see someone standing up to fight the ignorance being propagated by the OLCC.

No, festivals are not always appropriate for children, but, I should be the one making the decision regarding my child's presence there. And of course, if my child is unruly, I should be asked to leave.

What I cannot understand is the response of the BA mentioned above. Such a lack of understanding of the basic value of family is unfathomable to me.

As a father of two sons of course I know the Fests where they don't belong but there are times, holy crap it's true I tell you!, where a family style Beer Fest CAN be enjoyed by all those attending. Whether they be Fest goers, brewers or whomever.

I'll never forget the recent (this past September) Beer Off The Plaza Fest on Bear Republic's grounds. The brewer from Schooner's was there pouring with his ENTIRE family. And man were they were enjoying themselves.

Should kids be allowed at every Fest? Of course not. But to disallow it at an event that wholeheartedly supported it prior is pathetic.

Cheers!

Very nice Jay. As usual, your eloquent advocacy of healthy consumption of alcohol (read not closeted away, binge drinking) is much appreciated.

It's sad that the neo-prohibs have convinced even beer drinkers that their hobby is one to be hidden from the world.
