Absolutely brilliant post. I couldn't agree more. I have always assumed that there was some state law that required age verification and that the breweries had to do it to comply with that state's regulations. It's easier to require everyone to verify their age than try to filter IP addresses from a particular state.

Has anyone asked the breweries why they require verification?

Jay, just curious, what is the source of your statistics on reading?

On the subject of requiring website visitors to verify their age, it is one of the most asinine things I frequently run across on the internet. I visit a lot of brewery websites, and when confronted with an age verification page, the vast majority of the time I don't go any further. If I do bother to bypass the verification, I usually type in random dates or make random selections if they have dropdown lists. What could they possibly think these things are accomplishing? Are they truly stupid enough to think they would prevent anyone intent on visiting their site from doing so? I suspect lawyers and some twisted perception of liability have something to do with the decision to put website visitors through such rigmarole just to visit their site.

"58% of the US adult population never reads another book after high school"

That's stunning, Jay. Here's what I tell young people about reading (and this includes newspapers): It's the easiest thing you can do to get ahead in life. Since the majority of people don't read, you're one step ahead of everyone else if you just crack open a freaking book.
