Saturday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1960. It’s an interesting approach. The ad is trying to persuade people to leave their homes and drink beer in a bar or tavern, and using horse racing as the carrot. So either way Schlitz wins, since they’re the ones sponsoring the big three horse races.

Where’s the bookie? KY Derby day, private parties/bars usually had a pool where anyone interested (up to the # of horses in the field) could draw a number from a hat for a small ante (probably $1); there could have been multiple pools for big crowds (& many variations thereof).
Now, if one has a wi-fi capable device, one can bet the race online anywhere there’s access via XpressBet, TVG, or other online services – all the wagered $$ @ the track & stateside OTB sites goes into the same pool.
