Monday’s ad is for the Nippon Brewery, from 1912. Showing a couple of Geishas on a train, with a vendor at the station offering them beer from a full basket. Through the window on the other side of the train is a large factory, which is presumably the brewery.

Geishas traveled first class, who knew? I’m also surprised at the amount of English, not just for first class, but on the bottle labels too.

The English on the beer bottles doesn’t surprise me – Americans (rich industrialists, plus baseball players & coaches) had presence in Japan before Hirohito went nuts. Geishas traveling on trains seems odd – they were (& still are) pretty much local. Ads forever have turned a lot into “Fantasyland”.
