Tuesday’s ad is for Budweiser from 1958. It’s from the “Where There’s Life … There’s Bud” series and features a couple at the beach. The man is pouring beer from a can to overflowing — tilt the glass, dude! — while the woman tries to sip it up before it spills over the side, while holding a partially-eaten sandwich. Is it just me, or is there something vaguely odd about the ad?

re: “…tilt the glass, dude…”
Well, that was A-B’s official pour rec in that era –
“Proper Pouring
Beer should be poured “straight down the middle” of the glass so as to produce a nice head of foam. It is the foam that allows all of the locked in flavor and aroma to be released and enjoyed. We spend a lot of money creating these tiny bubbles of natural carbonation and we think they are worth the trouble – so, pour it right and enjoy it more!”
“Hops, Rice and Malt” – A-B promo booklet, 1965
(I think Randy Mosher’s “Tasting Beer” suggests the same thing).
A-B’s current draught guide says “tilt”, tho’ http://www.abdraught.com/draught-pour.aspx
While I tire of the immature beer geeks giggling over the use of the expression “good head” for beer, in this case of this ad, however…

Ah, the changing fashions of proper pouring …. I was actually thinking of it in terms of trying to reduce the head at least enough so all the beer would actually fit in the glass, that’s why I think he should have tilted. I tend to think it’s not an either/or (not straight/tilt) situation, but a combination to produce whatever head is appropriate to the beer.
