Beer In Ads #616: The Beer With The Friendly Flavor

May 28, 2012 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is another one from the 1950s, again for the Canadian beer Dow Ale. I love how in the fifties everybody dressed up to watch television, lounging at home in a suit and tie or party dress. What is it about the 50s where so many products claimed to be “friendly” in their advertising? For this one, it’s “the beer with the Friendly Flavor.” I love that.

Dow-1950s-friendly

Did real people actually leave their white collar duds on when they came home from work? My dad never wore coat & tie when he was a weather man in Fresno; after we moved to MD & he became a bureaucrat in late 1962, the coat & tie went into the closet as soon as he came home, unless he & my mom were going out to some upscale place for dinner. I was invited, but rarely joined them, as I thought getting “dressed up” for dinner was insane.

What’s even funnier about that ad is that the guy carrying the case likely would have needed to have his sport coat dry-cleaned afterward, AND that he has an overcoat over his left arm … but that was the 50’s fantasy portrayed everywhere, when reality was far different for the blue-collar folks. “The Honeymooners” was the only sitcom of that era that reflected the blue collar world (which in the 50’s was way bigger than the white collar world).
