Beer In Ads #3967: Miss Rheingold 1942 Still Serving

January 11, 2022 By Jay Brooks Leave a Comment

Tuesday’s ad is for “Rheingold Beer,” from 1942. This ad was made for the Rheingold Brewery, which was founded by the Liebmann family in 1883 in New York, New York. At its peak, it sold 35% of all the beer in New York state. In 1963, the family sold the brewery and in was shut down in 1976. In 1940, Philip Liebmann, great-grandson of the founder, Samuel Liebmann, started the “Miss Rheingold” pageant as the centerpiece of its marketing campaign. Beer drinkers voted each year on the young lady who would be featured as Miss Rheingold in advertisements. In the 1940s and 1950s in New York, “the selection of Miss Rheingold was as highly anticipated as the race for the White House.” The winning model was then featured in at least twelve monthly advertisements for the brewery, beginning in 1940 and ending in 1965. Beginning in 1941, the selection of next year’s Miss Rheingold was instituted and became wildly popular in the New York Area. This ad features Miss Rheingold 1942, who was Nancy Drake. Unlike the first two, who were both actresses, I could almost no information about Nancy Drake, apart from that she was born in 1918 and died just last year, and was married for a very long time to someone named Phelps. In this ad, from July, she’s holding a tray as part of a Rheingold Beer photo shoot Rheingold Beer ad, and afterwards she’s still serving beer at a small dinner party.

Beer Birthday: John Holl

January 11, 2022 By Jay Brooks 6 Comments

bow-tie

Today is the 42nd birthday — The Meaning of Life Year — of John Holl, a journalist who spent the early part of his career working the crime and politics beat at various newspapers. Now, he’s writing almost exclusively about beer from his home in northern New Jersey. He’s the former editor of All About Beer Magazine and has worked for most of the trade publications in some capacity over the years. He’s also written a few books including the American Craft Beer Cookbook and the forthcoming Craft Brewery Cookbook. In recent years he’s done a number of podcasts including Drink Beer, Think Beer, Steal This Beer, and The BYO Nano Podcast. In 2019 he founded the site Beer Edge with Andy Crouch. He also works as a contributing editor at Wine Enthusiast Magazine. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know John during some travel over the last few years, from Denver to Boston, Brussels, even in Chile. He’s been a great addition to the fraternity of beer writers. Join me in wishing John a very happy birthday.
