Beer In Ads #1211: Wherefore Art Thou Schlitz

June 3, 2014 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1949. It’s one of Schlitz’s long-running three-panel series, with Romeo inexplicably up in the balcony, looking down on a tray of beer and his beloved Juliet making time with someone holding a script. So he went down to investigate, er, try some beer.

How ironic it is that Schlitz has been in “Wherefore art Thou?” mode for 20+ yrs & sells at Pabst (or less) prices these days (IF you can find it – I haven’t seen any Schlitz beer, just “the Bull” in CA since the early 90’s). They made a huge mistake buying Stroh’s (late 70’s/early 80’s) when Bud & Miller were kicking their ass for market share (Miller because of Lite; Bud because of huge ad budget & ruthless sports & music tour promoting). Soon thereafter, Coors started distributing nationally, further cooking Schlitz’s goose (& Coors realized the importance of having a light beer in its product line & promoting the hell out of it, which Schlitz/Stroh’s never did – tho there was & maybe still is a Stroh’s Light).
