Beer In Ads #1611: Mabel … Black Label

July 9, 2015 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Carling’s Black Label, from 1956. Using their iconic Mabel character in a fairly simple ad, she’s holding up a card with the beer logo on it. That’s pretty much it, but in the context of the other ads being run at that time, it still works. I’m thirsty.

Yes, I still remember those ads. My father drank only Black Label.

I still drink Black Label. It is one of the biggest beers in South Africa and (obviously) produced by SAB.

I heard that SAB now (officially) owns the Black Label Brand.

I’m old enough to remember those ads – but Carling Red Cap ale (which I think was made just in Canada) was far superior to the beer made in the US. Carling’s all but disappeared from US shelves; like a lot of once-popular brands, it’s just another “generic” that sells for cheap.
