Sunday’s ad is for Kingsbeer Lager, from 1955. The brand was produced by Dow Breweries of Quebec, Canada. A simple ad, but “So Light! So Right!” is a pretty funny tagline. But it’s nothing compared to the other ad copy. “Rice brewed to the Canadian taste.” Ah, the Canadian taste.
Gary Gillman says
KIngsbeer has an interesting history, originally it was called or inspired by a German style or brand of beer called “konigsbier”. It was a lager, hence the reference to light and rice – the regular style of beer then in Eastern Canada was ale which was heavier and used less adjunct. Kingsbeer was one of the early beers which inaugurated the American taste into Canadian beer at least in the eastern part of the country. This beer left the scene though after the fall of stablemate Dow Ale, a story unto itself….
