Beer In Ads #250: Big D Makes The Big Difference In Fun

November 24, 2010 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Drewery’s Beer with the hilarious slogan “Big D Makes The Big Difference In Fun.” Drewrys Beer of South Bend, Indiana was done in the 1950s. Drewrys was actually a Canadian brand, but for most of its history was brewed in Indiana. How about all those really happy people in what looks like the cleanest, most nondescript bar in the world. And I love the bottom, where it says “some beers are two heavy … some are too light … Big D is always just right.” A Goldilocks beer.

I think the guy with the red tie is a shake down artist who sees the man with the hat as his next victim, The woman at the table seems medicated. Maybe hooked on vicodin.

The copy reads like a radio spot. The subhead “Now Read This” in the upper right corner is subtle touch.

“Big D” = Dallas (as in the old song lyric “Big ‘D’, double ‘L’ – ‘A’ – ‘S’, my, oh yes!”) to the rest of the USA. For sure, this brew had limited US distribution (Dallas never heard of it/took offense) & vanished into brewerania-land.

My last name is very similar to this beer from South Bend, IN. When I was a boy growing up in the 60’s in central PA, listening to AM radio was so popular. One evening in the mid-60’s, I heard on WOWO radio, the Drewrys Brewery jingle, the first and only time. I wonder when the enterprise went out of business. Then a few years ago I was visiting relatives in Kalamazoo. A few of us went to the Kalamazoo Brewing Co./ Bells Brewing, for some beers and on my way to the bathroom saw a Drewrys tin sign. Took a picture of it to get blown up to have behind my own bar in my home. Anyone have ideas of where I could locate a “real” sign of Drewrys. BTW, great Blog site.
