Beer In Ads #841: What Made Milwaukee Change To Blatz?

April 9, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Blatz, from 1953. Apparently Milwaukee in olden days had Sousaphone players wearing Lederhosen serenading restaurant diners but nowadays, thanks to Blatz, it’s a violinist. I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but I actually love a good oompah band. I also have to wonder. How did they fill two pilsner glasses with only one bottle of beer?

Great ad! Note how the late 1800’s dark beer and “heavy” tuba music are contrasted to the light-coloured lager of the early 1950’s and its appropriate “light” violin music. Today, all craft beer, light or dark, is premised on the kind of “harsh”, “heavy” beer this company was telling us was no good any more, i.e., traditional beer. Funny thing is I still like the ad, it shows the blandishments of good advertising.
