California freelance journalist Andrew Rosenblum has an interesting short history of malt liquor marketing on Accidental Blogger entitled What Was Malt Liquor?
Thanks for sharing a great article with its of seemingly hard to find research. Really thought provoking reading.

Ditto Derrick’s comments.
I remember many of those old ads fom my days living in a MD suburb of DC (did CA get Colt 45 ads in the 60’s?). In the 60’s & somewhat beyond, National Brewing in Baltimore (which Carling bought late 60’s/early 70’s) had the Colt-45 license. Sometimes during Orioles/Senators telecasts, you’d see ads for both Nat’l Boh & Colt 45. Colt 45 was a “greaser” fave for a quick drunk in my HS days. I had a few tastes of it in my late teens & thought it was crap.
A-B’s Malt liquor bombed, but they’ve done OK w/King Cobra, which, tho I’m not fond of that stuff, I think tastes better than the competition.
