The original rogue, Jack Joyce, who founded Oregon Brewing — better known today as Rogue — would have celebrated his 81st birthday today. Sadly, he passed away in late May of 2014. Join me in drinking a toast to Jack’s memory today.

Before they made Jack they broke the mold. Jack is one of a kind and it’s a good thing he’s on our side. He introduced me to a guy named Don Younger many years ago and I knew I had a future getting old.

Jack was a great friend when I was writing early books on craft brewing with RedBrick Press. He invited me to his home in Dundee one summer when I was on my way to the OBF. We stayed up late talking books, politics, travel — and beer! He was my host again at Rogue’s Newport Beach brewpub, again more spirited conversations and life stories. The last time we met in Lake Oswego around 2010 when he was testing retirement, not sure if he was ready to sit back and smell the hops. Miss you Jack.
