Sunday’s ad is for Busch Bavarian Beer, from 1965. The ad says you get everything in your beer — imported hops, slow-cold aging (whatever that is) and natural carbonation — everything, that is, except an egg. Which is weird, because who thought you should get an egg in your beer?
Gary Gillman says
Stephen Morris in his wonderful The Great Beer Trek(1984 but chronicling a late 1970’s beer tour of America) said Michelob had a “filling ‘eggy’ taste”. Busch was a lighter, notably clean beer. So what seems a whimsical advertising technique may have been a A-B-ad agency in-joke. 🙂
Morris was quite right about Michelob then. I assume you would have read this book back in the day Jay but if not it’s essential reading. Morris is still going strong in Vermont and had plans to issue an update of the book, I am not sure of the status.
