Tuesday’s ad is for gehört zum Essen, or “Beer belongs to the food,” from 1950. That’s the Google translation, I suspect there’s a better, idiomatic meaning to that phrase. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This is part of a series of posters promoting beer by the German Brewers Association in the mid-20th century. It was created by German artist Thomas Abeking.

The also a few years later used the same Abeking illustration but with different text, in this case “fördert Appetit und Stoffwechsel,” which translated as “beer promotes appetite and metabolism.”
