Today is the birthday of Matthias Froehlich (September 9, 1825-December 2, 1894). He was born in Triebs, Pommern, which at the time was part of Prussia but today is located in northwest Poland. At 27, in 1852, he emigrated to the U.S., arriving in New York City in early June. He settled in Watertown, Wisconsin, where he and his wife Verina Fuss had five children, although she passed away in 1876. He remarried Veronica S. Zender, and the couple had two children together.

In 1860, he founded the Mathias Froehlich Brewery, which remained open just ten years, closing in 1870. Unfortunately, very little is known about Froehlich or his brewery.
