Guinness Ad #89: Chuckle, Chuckle, Through The Night

October 15, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 89th Guinness shows the opposite of last week’s sun beating down on a smiling pint of Guinness. In this case, it’s a full moon. The tagline is the usual “Guinness is good for you,” but the real gem is the poem:

Chuckle, chuckle, through the night,
You are such a cheerful sight
Up above the world so high,
Like a Guinness in the sky.

Guinness Ad #88: When The Sun Says Morning Gone

October 8, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 88th Guinness shows the sun beating down on a smiling pint of Guinness. With the long slogan, “When the sun says “Morning gone” Guinness Time will spur you on.” Makes me thirsty, just looking at it.

Guinness Ad #87: A Guinness A Day

October 1, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 87th Guinness is pretty simple, showing seven pints of smiling Guinness, with the slogan “A Guinness a day.” That’s one for each day of the week, with the final tagline “Guinness is good for you.”

Guinness Ad #86: Guinness Time On The S.S. Skylark

September 24, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 86th Guinness is from 1952, though it’s not strictly an ad. It was the cover for Guinness’ internal newsletter, Guinness Time. Apparently the man dressed like a butler or private driver had a bottle of Guinness — the one on the fence — and was able to just carry the large family, boat and all, the ocean for some recreational fun.

Beerstrology Sign: Libra

September 23, 2011 By Jay Brooks

zodiac
While I don’t put any stock in astrology, in 1980 Guinness put out a calendar with each month representing one of the zodiac signs, and I thought it would be fun to share these throughout the year.

Libra, the scales, is from September 23-October 23. To learn more, see:

Beer In Ads #441: If It’s Just Something Cold And Wet You Want, Drink Water

September 19, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is from 1964 and is for a Guinness product, their Harp Lager. It uses a curious slogan, “If it’s just something cold and wet you want, drink water.” Since I can’t help but think of Harp as not much more flavorful than water, it doesn’t exactly make me want to rush out and buy some of their beer. But I do love the photograph of the beer beautifully posed on rolling sands.

Guinness Ad #85: Guinness Brings The Oysters Out Of Their Shell

September 17, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 85th Guinness is yet another simple one, though it looks slightly more modern. With a pint of Guinness next to four oysters, the tagline reads “Guinness Brings the Oysters out of their Shell,” followed by the more common “Guinness id good for you.”

Guinness Ad #83: Two Heads Are Better Than One

September 3, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 83rd Guinness is another simple one, showing two anthropomorphized Guinness pints, though the one on the right seems to be lucky one, getting the last drop of Guinness. The appropriate slogan is “Two heads are better than one.”

Guinness Ad #82: Have A Guinness When You’re Tired

August 27, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 82nd Guinness is a simple one, showing an anthropomorphized Guinness pint sitting, rather then his usual standing position. He’s got both his arms and legs folded/crossed although he is still smiling. The tagline reads “Have a Guinness when you’re tired.”
