Beer In Ads #461: 7th Inning Schlitzstretch

October 24, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Schlitz from 1957. It was part of their Schlitzerland ad campaign, one of my absolute favorites by any brewery. I just love the artwork. And the baseball theme seemed appropriate as we just watched game 5 of the World Series. So come on, “Be a Schlitzer. Be refreshed.”

Beer In Ads#457: If You Like Beer You’ll Love Schlitz Again

October 18, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is a third Schlitz ad from 1954, and it’s very similar to the last two Schlitz ads. It also uses the slogan “If you like beer you’ll love Schlitz,” though this time a really, really happy-looking man with a huge smile — most likely a grocery clerk — is holding a six-pack of Schlitz cans as if to hand them off to a waiting customer. He looks a little bit like a very young, though slightly less skinny, Frank Sinatra.

Beer In Ads#456: If You Like Beer You’ll Love Schlitz Redux

October 17, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is a second Schlitz ad from 1954, and it’s very similar to Friday’s Schlitz ad. It also uses the slogan “If you like beer you’ll love Schlitz,” though this time the woman hostess in the ad is dressed more casually and appears to be standing over a metal bucket filled with ice and bottles of beer.

Beer In Ads #455: If You Like Beer You’ll Love Schlitz

October 14, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is from 1954, and is for Schlitz. With a slogan of “If you like beer you’ll love Schlitz,” the woman in the ad is dressed to the nines in a green cocktail dress. Behind her there appears to be a party going on. Two odd comments, though. First, aren’t those flowers in the right foreground lilies? And aren’t lilies for funerals? Second, what the hell is on that food tray on the table. It looks like a giant cheeseball with olives and cocktail weenies sticking out of it.

Beer In Ads #447: World’s Most Famous Taste In Beer

October 4, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is from 1955, years before the Blue Man Group. It’s for Schlitz, and shows a blue skinned server holding a tray containing two full pilsner glasses of beer and a half-empty bottle of Schlitz. Is it just me, or does that math not quite work? The tagline is the “World’s Most Famous Taste In Beer.”

Beer In Ads #442: Mellow As Moonlight

September 20, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is from 1944 and is for Schlitz. Showing a man wooing a woman by romantically rowing her in a canoe, presumably by moonlight, however there’s no beer in the scene. Wouldn’t he have better luck giving her some Schlitz? Now that’s a social lubricant.

Beer In Ads #435: Schlitz For Income Taxes

August 26, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is a third one for Schlitz, again from 1952, and it shows another housewife bringing a Schlitz to another husband, though this time instead of reading the newspaper, he’s doing his taxes. I’m sure that will help reduce the number of crumpled pieces of paper.

Beer In Ads #434: The Schlitz Puppy

August 25, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Schlitz, also from 1952, and it shows another housewife bringing a Schlitz to another newspaper-reading husband. But for reasons unknown, the puppy in the foreground is giving us quite a look. What do you think his expression is trying to convey? I’m stumped.

Beer In Ads #433: Schlitz For A Bonnet

August 24, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is also for Schlitz, from 1952, and it shows a devious housewife bringing a Schlitz to her newspaper-reading husband. She’s glancing back at us with a knowing smile as she prepares to soften the blow of the new chapeau she’s just bought at the “Bonnet Shop” by serving him a beer. Nice.

Beer In Ads #432: Schlitz Is An Adventure

August 23, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is another Schlitz ad, this one from 1941, presumably before we entered World War 2 that December. In the ad, a man in a captain’s hat lounges on a tropic island as a native beauty arrives with a tray containing a bottle of Schlitz and a glass. You can see a ship anchored offshore in the distance. The tagline is awesome: “Schlitz is in an adventure in good living that’s within the reach of everyone.”
