On Saturday, the winners of the Great American Beer Festival were announced. A total of 234 medals were awarded in 78 categories (gold, silver and bronze). California breweries took home 39 of the 234 awards, or about 17% of the total. Only Colorado, with 44 medals, won more. Oregon won 22 and Washington 13, making them 3rd and 4th, respectively. My birth state of Pennsylvania came in 5th, with 12, with only the top five in double digits. The top winners by state were:
- Colorado — 44
- California — 39
- Oregon — 22
- Pennsylvania — 14*
- Washington — 13
- Michigan — 9
- TIE: New York, Virginia — 8
- TIE: Illinois, Maryland — 7
- Montana — 6
- Wisconsin — 5
* According to Jack Curtin, the 2 medals won by Iron Hill were actually brewed in Pennsylvania (though they were entered in Delaware because that’s where their corporate headquarters are located) so Pennsylvania should have 14 and be in 4th place instead of 5th. Because I don’t want to get into a debate about which A-B or Miller brewery their medal winners came from and how that might also alter the state medal counts, I’ll just let Jack have his way this time.
The Great American Beer Festival by the numbers:
- 457 breweries in the festival hall
- 2,100 beers served at the festival
- 49,000 attendees (includes brewers, volunteers and ticket holders)
- 3,000 volunteers
- 495 breweries in the competition
- 3,308 beers judged in the competition
- 78 categories judged + Pro-Am category
- 132 judges from ten countries

Below is a slideshow of the award ceremony at GABF. After clicking on the arrow in the center to start the slideshow, you can also click on the button on the bottom right with the four arrows pointing outward on it, to see the photos in glorious full screen.
I shot all of the winners, but there are several that were not focused or for other reasons didn’t turn out well. Also, you may notice the clueless photographer and/or his camera in the bottom of many of the photos. It was very difficult to shoot around him and he seemed completely oblivious to the fact that there were a dozen or more people behind him also trying to to photograph the winners. The people in the photos haven’t yet been identified yet, but I wanted to get them up as soon as possible. It will take me a bit longer to add that detail, because the winners don’t get to the stage in the same order that their names are called, making it tougher to label them.
Brewers, if you want to use any of the photos, feel free to click on the link in the upper left hand corner marked “Back to your GABF Awards 2009 set” on Flickr (or one of these links). From there, click on the photo you want. Then click on “All sizes” followed by “Original.” When the original is displayed, there will be a link called “Download original size.” Click on that to download the highest resolution of the photo. If you use it in a place where it makes sense to attribute it and link back to the Brookston Beer Bulletin, that would be appreciated, but it’s not strictly necessary. Enjoy.

234 medals for 495 breweries. So almost a 50% chance of your brewery getting a medal. Don’t you think that devalues the medals just a teensy-weensy bit?
But I guess that’s the point of having so many categories – to give everyone a chance to win.

Thanks for sharing, Jay!
I’ll help you with labeling, so you can just copy and paste:

Jay Brooks says
Ron,
Well, I can’t help but think that sounds a teensy-weensy disingenuous. I’m not sure that’s the best way to look at it. First of all, only 152 breweries of the 495 won medals, or only 31%. But more importantly, for your assertion to be true, every brewery would have had to enter a beer in all 78 categories. They don’t. Each brewery is allowed to enter a maximum of 11 beers. The average is something like 6 or 7 per brewery. For that reason, the odds drop precipitously looking it at it that way.
The better way to think about it, in my opinion, is that 234 medals were awarded out of 3,308 beers entered. That’s only a 7% chance using just random statistics.
But let’s turn the lens around and look at the Great British Beer Festival. You awarded 21 medals (not including the Grand Champions) in 7 categories. That’s out of an advertised 450 or 500 beers, ciders and international beers (depending on which part of the GBBF website you choose). I couldn’t find a number of just the beers entered in competition, but working back from the higher number, 500, there were 157 international “producers” and 71 cider makers. Assuming they were each only pouring 1 beer or cider (a very conservative assumption), removing them leaves us with 272 beers. That gives British beers about a 7.7% chance of winning a medal, or nearly the same as us, though slightly higher.
Assuming that some of the cideries and foreign brands were pouring more than one beer or both a cider & a perry, which seems reasonable, then the number of UK beers drops again. Taking a quick glance at the International Beer List, De Molen (Netherlands) alone was pouring 4 beers. A quick count reveals 283 foreign beers and 90 ciders & perries or at least 373 beers and ciders not part of the judging for GBBF. Working back from 500, or let’s use 550 (since one quote was “over 500”), then the odds of winning a medal at GBBF are actually greater than at GABF. 550 minus 373 leaves 177 beers to win 21 medals, or roughly a 12% chance over 7% for GABF. So you want to talk devaluation?
I don’t actually believe having so many categories is about having more medals, as you suggest. I’m keenly aware of the feelings of most Brits on the issue of beer styles run amuck. But even conceding that we’ve undoubtedly gone a teensy-weensy bit too far in the number we judge, it’s more about the sheer number of different beers that are being brewed over here. We draw not from just one nation’s brewing traditions, but literally from all of them. We’re as much a melting pot — or melting brew kettle — of beer as people and between that and making up our own styles, we keep adding styles because there are so many examples of each of them being entered. When enough breweries stop brewing a particular judged style, it’s removed. Our judged categories change to keep pace with the innovation and creativity of our beer scene. The large number is, at least in part, to allow like beers to be judged against one another. Ask Melissa Cole about the rigors of our judging compared to GBBF. We’re not just trying to hand out as many medals as possible, but take each category seriously and often don’t award three medals in a category if the judges don’t find three beers that they feel exemplify the requirements of a good example of a particular style.
Reading back over what I wrote, I hope I don’t sound too churlish, but you did happen to push my buttons a bit. That may have been inadvertent on your part, but then I’m still recovering from last week and have some deadlines looming to boot. Thanks for enlivening the debate.
Ron Pattinson says
It’s difficult to get a quick overview if the number of beers at the GBBF. But I counted the number of British breweries with Real Ales at the festival and that came to 278. So there’s no way that the number of beers in the competition was 177 or 272. I suspect the 450 quoted is the number of real ales, not the total number of beers, perries and ciders.
Looking at individual brewery entries ( I can’t be bothered to go through them all), many breweries had two beers at the festival. So the 450 sounds reasonable to me. It would be weird if more than half the beers at the festival were foreign.
So 450 cask beers, going for 18 medals (I’m leaving out the bottled category because the vast majority of beers at the festival aren’t eligible for that category.)
18 medals, 450 beers – I make that a 4% chance. But there were some joint bronze medals, so 22 medals were awarded in total – a 4.8% chance.
I stand by my statement about a brewery having far more chance of winning a medal at the GABF. Only 21 of the 278 British brewers won a medal at GBBF. That’s just 7.5% – way below GABF’s 31%.
J says
I agree it seemed like too small a number, also, but the top of the GBBF website clearly says “Over 450 Real Ales, Ciders and Foreign Beers from around the world.” That comma made it pretty unambiguous that ciders and foreign beer were included in the tally. And since the goal of the website and the press releases are to increase attendence, it seemed (and seems) reasonable to assume those numbers would be on the high side to make the festival appear in the best possible light. Being too lazy to actually go through and count them all yesterday, I guess I have no choice today. But I believe you’ll be pleased with the results.

Theakston = 6
Wells & Young’s = 7
That’s a total of 464, 383 not including the bottles. So with 18 medals, the odds for 464 beers is 3.9% and for the 383 cask beers it’s 4.7%. With the joint bronze, at 22, it’s 4.7 and 5.7% respectively.
As I still believe beers, not breweries, is the way to measure success, the GABF’s 7% vs. 4.7 or 5.7% doesn’t seem like a statistically large enough gap to devalue the worth of a GABF medal. I’ll concede that it may be easier for an American brewer to medal than a British one, but I still believe both work every bit as hard to earn them.
