Beer In Ads #3215: Go Snow Fight

December 22, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Sunday’s ad is for Tuborg, from fairly recently. From the late 1800s until the 1970s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all year, and for the remainder of December will feature holiday-themed posters of all ages. This poster was created for Tuborg’s Christmas beer, Julebryg, which they release each year on the first Friday in November. To my delight, they call the release date “J-Dag” or “J-Day.” For a number of years, they’ve used the same cartoon imagery and personalities in the ads, and seem to have a lot of fun with them. This one is from 2015. The text reads: “Go’ snekamp …,” which translates as “Go snow fight.”

This one is from around 2014, I believe. The text reads: “Pas på, Allan! Der falder sne på dansegulvet i aften,” which translates as “Watch out, Allan! Snow is falling on the dance floor tonight.”

Friday’s ad is for Guinness, from fairly recently. From the late 1800s until the 1970s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all year, and for the remainder of December will feature holiday-themed posters of all ages. This poster was created by an unknown marketing firm, but appears to be inspired by the John Gilroy artwork of the earlier 20th century.

Thursday’s ad is for Bären-Brauerei Weihnachtsbier, from the 1950s. From the late 1800s until the 1970s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all year, and for the remainder of December will feature holiday-themed posters of all ages. This poster was created by an unknown marketing person using the 1920s image of the bear painted for the brewery by German artist Ludwig Hohlwein.

Beer In Ads #3210: Oktoberfest Poster Finalists

December 17, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for the Munich Oktoberfest, from recent years, though none are the official poster for those years. These are all second or third place winners from 2010 and a number that were entered but did not place in the top three in 2017. From the late 1800s until the 1970s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster is for the Munich Oktoberfest, which began September 21 and runs through October 6. Originally I thought from now until then I’d post posters from the German folk festival, but now that Oktoberfest is over I think I’ll just keep going. From what I can tell, official Oktoberfest posters started being produced each year beginning in 1952. This will be the final Oktoberfest poster post.

Monday’s ad is for the Munich Oktoberfest, from 2019, though it’s not the official poster for that year. This one was the third place winner from that year’s contest to choose the official poster. From the late 1800s until the 1970s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster is for the Munich Oktoberfest, which began September 21 and runs through October 6. From what I can tell, official Oktoberfest posters started being produced each year beginning in 1952. This poster was created by German artist Kirsten Lauterbach.
