Beer In Ads #1222: Good For You!

June 14, 2014 By Jay Brooks

Saturday’s ad is a trade ad by the United States Brewers Foundation, from 1959. Featuring a foursome bowling, the text starts with “What a great feeling to see all the pins go down…” followed by the tagline “Good for you!” “A strike! You did it.” Ah, bowling. But I especially love the end. “A glass of beer adds so much fun to so many occasions. And it really picks you up, too!”

A good reminder of the great popularity of 10 pin bowling in the 50’s-60’s. It was a good way to get some exercise and anyone could do it. Does bowling even still exist I wonder…

Bowling still exists (there’s still a pro tour), but it has maybe 10% of the league participitants it did up thru the mid-70’s, when the decline began to the sorta “steady state” it’s in now. It’s more popular in places where entertainment & recreation choices are minimal than it is in big city metro areas.

I bowled in leagues every season but 3 from the time I was 13 until I gave it up after the 1997-98 season. “Beer frame” was a part of all adult leagues – if the 1st 2 players on the team got strikes, then “beer frame” was on – if everyone on the team got a strike tnat frame, then it either carried over or the team captain bought the round. If all but one struck, then the non-striker bought the round (which wasn’t necessarily all beer – even in the 90’s, finding craft brew in a bowling alley bar was nearly impossible, which probably still is the case in most of BF Nowhere bowling alleys).
