Beer In Ads #337: Red Tower, Famous The World Over

March 30, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for a British beer, Red Tower Pilsner Lager from Manchester. The illustration is amazing. I love the details of the tray and all the little things on it. I have no idea when the ad is from, but it must be after 1933, when Walker & Homfray renamed its Royal Brewery for their popular new beer, the Red Tower Lager Brewery Ltd. By 1956, the brewery had been acquired by Scottish & Newcastle, so it seems likely the ad is from between 1933 and 1956.

A very nice piece of advertising, indeed. It looks like it should be from the 1930s. There’s no connection with Walker & Homfrays though, as far as I know (they were in Salford at the Woodside Brewery). The Red Tower Lager brewery came about through the Moss Side Brewery Co. and Royal Moss Side Brewery Co., as far as I can ascertain. Somewhere in there previously were John Lees Ltd and the Palatine Brewing & Bottling Co. But never any mention of Walker & Homfrays.
    Hope that helps.
