Stephen Colbert Tastes Walgreen’s New Private Label Beer “Big Flats”

February 3, 2011 By Jay Brooks

colbert-report
Last month, you may recall, the drug store chain Walgreen’s debuted a private label beer brewed by Genesee, which they call Big Flats 1901. On last night’s Colbert Show, during his regular Tip of the Hat/Wag of My Finger segment, Stephen talked about the new Walgreen’s beer, and even tried a can of the beer. Wait through the British Superman story for the hilarious Big Flats piece.

Tried it because I couldn’t resist; not as bad as Billy Beer, but pretty close!

Drank a 6-pack… terrible. You’ll pick up the “skunk oder” immediately, even if opening the beer at arm’s length from your face. Taste = old, smell = terrible, finish = tough. Not a good beer. Definitely not worth more than $.50 cents per can. But, I still drank them…

    “a skunk odor when opened”

“a headache coming on after finishing it.”

    Nice – sign me up.

12 dollars a case is a fair price for corn lager. These ivory tower egg heads need to remember what minimum wage is. Perhaps Walgreens want to sell a beer that it’s employees can afford

Who boy, that’s funny stuff. “It’s the beer that makes it,” a tagline that recalls Delta’s brilliant “We get you there.”

Sorry for being so late w/this, but, believe it or not, Trader Joe’s sells “Simpler Times” Lager (6% ABV) & Pilsener (5.6 % ABV) for the same $2.99/6 that don’t smell bad & are quaffable – they’re brewed under contract in Monroe, WI.

When Walgreen’s first hit CA in the 80’s, they sold alcohol at good prices – then, after a couple stores got busted many times for selling to underage (the store at E 18th & 5th Ave in Oakland was the prime baddie), they stopped selling alcohol, & I don’t know if they’ve resumed – lastime I was in my nearby WalG’s was to buy a Clipper card (for ye not in the Bay Area, it’s a refillable public transit card that’s usable on BART & most of the local buses & ferries).

AMEN to Colbert – I’m still PO’d about CVS taking over Long’s (& before that People’s in the DC area)!
