Saturday’s ad is for Tuborg, from the early 1900s, I believe. From the late 1800s until the 1970s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all year, and for the remainder of December will feature holiday-themed posters of all ages. “Tuborg is a Danish brewing company founded in 1873 on a harbour in Hellerup, an area North of Copenhagen, Denmark. Since 1970 it has been part of the Carlsberg Group.” I’m not sure what artist created this poster, but there are marks in the upper left and bottom left that may be the artist’s signature. The text on the bottom of poster reads “Det var det, jeg vilde ha’e!,” which Google translates as “That’s what I wanted!.” It does, however, resemble a close-up of the Thirsty Man after he got his hands on a beer.
Beer In Ads #3234: Tuborg Drive-By Drinking
Friday’s ad is for Tuborg, from the early 1900s, I believe. Since 1970 it has been part of the Carlsberg Group.” I’m not sure what artist created this poster, but it sure is an odd idea. A presumably well-to-do couple is out for a drive in their newfangled horseless carriage when they become parched, and stopped for a drink. A waiter comes up to their car with a tray and the driver pours himself a beer, a Tuborg Pilsner. The rest of the text on the poster reads “fremad overalt,” which Google translates as “forward everywhere.” One for the road, indeed.
Beer In Ads #3233: Tuborg Golden Lady
Thursday’s ad is for Tuborg, from 1995. Since 1970 it has been part of the Carlsberg Group.” This poster was created by Steffen Bloch in 1995 for the 100th anniversary of Tuborg Gold, which debuted in 1895 for the export market. The beer was also known by its nickname, “The Golden Lady,” which was the inspiration for this poster.
The most famous “Golden Lady” was Danish actress Annette Strøyberg, who worked as a model for Tuborg as the Golden Lady in the mid-1950s before she began acting in 1958.
Beer In Ads #3232: Tuborg Beer’s Progress Over 25 Years
Wednesday’s ad is for Tuborg, from 1913. Since 1970 it has been part of the Carlsberg Group.” I wasn’t able to figure out who created this poster. The text, which reads: “Tuborg øllets fremgang gennem 25 aar” followed by “Fremgangen Skyldes
Den Ypperlige Kvalitet” translates as “Tuborg beer’s progress over 25 years” and at the bottom, “The progress, due, The Excellent Quality.” The brewery itself was founded in 1873, but this 25th anniversary in 1913 is based on something starting in 1888, possibly this specific beer?

Beer In Ads #3230: Tuborg’s Thirsty Man
Monday’s ad is for Tuborg, from 1900. Since 1970 it has been part of the Carlsberg Group.” This poster was created by Danish artist Erik Henningsen, who was “best known for his Social Realist paintings of poor and exposed groups in the 1880s and 1890s.” This image became one of the most recognizable images for Danish beer. Here’s the story, from Henningsen’s Wikipedia page:
In 1900, the Tuborg Breweries announced a competition for a “decorative advertisement poster” to mark its 25 years jubilee. The first prize, which was rewarded with a sum of DKK 10,000, was taken by Jens Ferdinand Willumsen, but it was ultimately Henningsen’s entry, known as The Thirsty Man, which was put into production by the brewery. It has since obtained iconic status and become one of the most immediately recognizable posters in Denmark.
Beer In Ads #3229: Tuborg Wagon
Sunday’s ad is for Tuborg, from 1915. Since 1970 it has been part of the Carlsberg Group.” I’m not sure who created this poster, but one commenter claimed “umbrellas with logos began to be used from the 1880s to protect beer carts from the sun and rain,” which is the reason for the umbrella on this wagon.
Beer In Ads #3228: Tuborg Boy Beer
Saturday’s ad is for Tuborg, from 1932. From the late 1800s until the 1970s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. Since 1970 it has been part of the Carlsberg Group.” This poster is by German artist Hans Heinrich Koch. I have to confess, I’m not sure what constitutes a “Boy Beer,” but I can’t think of any positive explanations.
Beer In Ads #3227: Tuborg Sailor

Beer In Ads #3226: When Does a Tuborg Taste Best?
Thursday’s ad is for Tuborg, from the 1950s or 1970s. Since 1970 it has been part of the Carlsberg Group.” This poster is by Danish cartoonist, writer, animator, illustrator, painter, and humorist Robert Storm Petersen, who signed his work “Storm P.” The ad used an earlier cartoon by Storm P. since he died in 1949. The text reads. “Du Perikles — Ka’ Du Sige mig — hvornaar smager en Tuborg bedst?” and the reply is “Hvergang!” That translates as “You Pericles — Can You Tell Me — When Does a Tuborg Taste Best?” And his answer? “Everytime!”
Below is a version of the original illustration without the Tuborg logo added. I don’t know if the text was added to suit the ad or if it was part of the original, too.
