Beer In Ads #344: Elegant Schlitz

April 8, 2011 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Friday’s ad is for Schlitz from 1949 showing a close-up of a can and a bottle, with a full beer glass in what appears to be a library setting. You can just make out on one of the leather-bound books that the first word in the title is “beer.” Though there is one discrepancy. Notice that the bottle isn’t even half empty but the beer glass is full. There’s no way that portion of the bottle could fill a beer glass that looks to be at least 12 oz., if not a full pint. Hmm.

Beer In Ads #341: Diving For Schlitz

April 5, 2011 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Tuesday’s ad is a 1950 ad for Schlitz, one of the three-panel ads that goes from curiosity to sampling to loving Schlitz. This one has a diving theme, not scuba diving but the old diving bell type.

Beer In Ads #325: Schlitz, Cowboy Music

March 7, 2011 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Monday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1950, and is one of a series of three panels ads that Schlitz created through the 1940s and 50s using as captions for the panels, “I was curious …,” “I tasted it …,” “No wonder Schlitz is …” blah, blah, blah. This one shows a country musical group. The fiddle player/snger tries some Schlitz and then the whole band starts smiling and playing again.

Beer In Ads #313: Schlitz’ Best Round I’ve Had All Day!

February 17, 2011 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Thursday’s ad is yet another one for Schlitz, but from the early 1950s. The winner of the golf club’s tournament looks pompously out at us while pouring a Schlitz into the trophy. “Best round I’ve had all day!” Exactly how many rounds of golf does this smug bastard have time for in a 24-hour period of time? Doesn’t he a least have a job so he can afford his club membership?

Beer In Ads #312: Schlitz’ Real Gusto Hat

February 16, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is also for Schlitz, though from the 1960s, and is a simple ad. It just shows a man draining a glass of Schlitz. I’m guessing it’s early sixties since he’s wearing a suit, scarf and goofy hat.

Beer In Ads #311: Schlitz’ Menu Foresight

February 15, 2011 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Tuesday’s ad is for Schlitz from 1946, and shows two women shopping. Each has a basket under her arm with bottles of Schlitz in them. Now that’s “Menu Foresight,” not that I can see any actual food in those baskets to pair with the beer.

Beer In Ads #309: Know The Real Joy Of Good Living

February 11, 2011 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Friday’s ad is another Schlitz ad, from 1959. From the last years when square was still cool, sort of, before the sixties changed all that. The happy couple is up in the mountains, overlooking a lake. The head-banded woman leans against a tree, holding a sandwich, while her beau pours a can of Schlitz into a pilsner glass.

Thursday’s ad is for Schlitz, one of their “I was curious” series from the 1950s. This was features some dandy cowboys that look like they could have been the inspiration for Brokeback Mountain.

Beer In Ads #302: Schlitz, How To Pamper A Husband

February 2, 2011 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Wednesday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1951. The title of it is “How to pamper a husband,” in this case one who mowed his way to the hammock, where he proceeded to take a nap. I’d like to think my wife would carry a tray holding a bottle of beer poured into a glass, smiling all the way, but I just can’t see it happening. I think it would be something more along the lines of WTF isn’t the lawn done?

Beer In Ads #285: Set Up The Fun With Light Refreshment

January 10, 2011 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Monday’s ad from the 1950s for Schlitz. It’s a bowling ad with a pun. “Set Up the Fun with Light Refreshment.” It cracks me up that he can’t put down the bowling ball long enough to drink his own beer, he needs help.
