Beer In Ads #160: Schlitz Fishing

July 28, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Wednesday’s ad is for Schlitz, most likely from the 1950s. I assume there was likely text with this ad, but I have only the art. But I like it this way, nice and simple. Cool art featuring three people enjoying the outdoors, with two cans of Schlitz in view and the logo hanging in the sky.

Wednesday’s ad is from the 1960 and is for Schlitz, featuring the slogan “Know the real joy good living … move up to Schlitz!” Some of the good living go-togethers include pretzels, popcorn, crackers and burgers.

Beer In Ads #154: Schlitz, Move Up To Quality

July 20, 2010 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is from the 1950s and is for Schlitz, featuring a beautiful natural vista with a man holding up a glass of beer against it as backdrop. And the slogan, “Move up to quality — move up to Schlitz,” is kind of a hoot. But I certainly want to be in that spot with a beer, if indeed it’s even a real place.

Beer In Ads #147: Schlitz, Don’t Get It Wet

July 9, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
For the last of Schlitz week, Friday’s ad is one from 1951. This one’s supposed to funny with the husband was letting his wife use a newspaper to keep it from raining on her hair and instead is holding their umbrella over the bottles of Schlitz in the bag in front of them. Oddly enough, the man with beer is holding his pipe in his mouth upside down. Is that perhaps to keep it dry?

Beer In Ads #146: Ask For Schlitz

July 8, 2010 By Jay Brooks

Without intending it, this week has become a Schlitz week, and Thursday’s ad is one from 1956. The waiter’s uniform is hilarious. Are they on a cruise ship? And I love the hat on the woman. Actually, the expression on all their faces are priceless. The tagline, “Ask for Schlitz … see why it outsells all other beers” is a classic taunt. Schlitz is also featured on the cover of the menu that the man is holding.

Beer In Ads #145: Schlitz, Gracious Hospitality

July 7, 2010 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is also for Schlitz and is most likely from the late 1940s or early fifties. The tagline, “When gracious hospitality calls for the best …” is a little odd. The woman has a maid or servant, but they’re still serving their guests just the bottles. It’s funny how the definition of gracious wouldn’t include a glass for the beer, but it was a different time, I guess. And where exactly is the woman in the yellow dress looking? She’s looking past the maid, but at what?

Beer In Ads #144: Schlitz, Real Gusto In A Can

July 6, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Tuesday’s ad is also for Schlitz and is from the 1960s. It features a woman with an odd look on her face opening the pull-top cans, just because she likes to, or as it says in bold print, “I just love to open ’em.” There are 14 open cans of beer shown in the ad. What do you think, did she drink them all?

Beer In Ads #143: Schlitz, That’s What I Call Real Beer

July 5, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Monday’s ad is for Schlitz and will likely make anyone from CAMRA do a double take. Because the ad’s slogan is “That what I call real beer … no wonder it made Milwaukee famous.” But I don’t think most real ale or cask-conditioned fans are likely to agree. I’m not sure when the ads is from exactly, but given the scene I’d have to guess late 1940s or early fifties.

Beer In Ads #132: Schlitz So Refreshing

Thursday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1956, when bowling was at the height of its popularity. Look how the dude is cradling his ball, I’ve never ever seen anyone hold their bowling ball like that. “So refreshing!”

Beer In Ads #119: Schlitz Your Thirst Can Feel

May 28, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Friday’s ad is another one for Schlitz, from 1955. The slogan is “Your Thirst Can ‘Feel’ the Difference!” at the top and on the bottom of the ad it’s “If you like beer you’ll love Schlitz.” I love the happy looking man in the gray flannel suit holding the very colorful six-pack of 16 oz. bomber cans.
