Beer In Ads #3763: Father’s Day Rainier

June 20, 2021 By Jay Brooks

Sunday’s ad is for “Rainier Beer,” from maybe the late 1800s or early 1900s, I’m not sure. This ad was made for the Seattle Brewing & Malting Co., who made Rainier Beer, and was later known as the Rainier Brewing Company of Seattle, Washington. This one is a reproduction sign showing a much earlier ad in which four “fathers,” friars, priests, or what have you, are enjoying some beer when one of them apparently passed out. And it appears that even men of the cloth will mess with someone passed out at a party as one of them is tickling his ear.

Beer In Ads #3762: Just Out!

June 19, 2021 By Jay Brooks

Saturday’s ad is for “Rainier Special,” from 1917. This ad was made for the Seattle Brewing & Malting Co., who made Rainier Beer, and was later known as the Rainier Brewing Company of Seattle, Washington. This one is announcing the release of a new beer from Rainier, which they called “Rainier Special.” This is just as prohibition is ramping up and apparently it was “Created in Response to Popular Demand for a 10c RAINIER Quality Drink,” but I think the other side of the ads is more telling. It reads. “A New Member of the RAINIER Family of Delicious Non-Alcoholic Beverages.” Which they also describe this way. “As Pure as the Snows That Crown Mt. Hood.” On the bottle, just below the name of the beer, it also reads. “Deliciously Mellow,” which I think is an interesting descriptor.

Friday’s ad is for “Rainier Beer,” from 1910. This ad was made for the Seattle Brewing & Malting Co., who made Rainier Beer, and was later known as the Rainier Brewing Company of Seattle, Washington. This one shows a crying child complaining to his mother that as the “family provider” she has neglected to keep on hand a supply of Rainier Beer. And you probably know: “Anybody who gives it a fair trial, from Baby up to Grandpa, prefers it as a beverage.”

I also found another version of the ad with a more green tint to it.

Tuesday’s ad is for “Malt Rainier,” from 1909. This one is for “Malt Rainier,” which is billed as “The Pure Malt Tonic for Mothers Who Require Additional Nourishment and Strength.” The ad also shows a woman and her baby and it’s not clear if she’s taking the malt tonic to give her extra nourishment and strength to feed her baby, or if she’s feeding it directly to her child.

Monday’s ad is for “Rainier Pale Beer,” from the early 1900s. This ad was made for the Seattle Brewing & Malting Co., who made Rainier Beer, and was later known as the Rainier Brewing Company of Seattle, Washington. This one shows a group of children around a maypole, although the pole itself is a giant bottle of beer.
