Toxic Paint Discovered At Old Rainier Brewery

March 4, 2010 By Jay Brooks

rainier
While the good news is the building may be able to be saved, the bad news is that the iconic Rainier Brewery building in Seattle, Washington is teeming with toxic PCBs from the paint. Here’s the story below, from KING 5 television.

The new Link Light Rail flies right next to it… Hopefully they’ll be able to save all of it!

The story does list “130 years” but the pictures are of the newer Rainier brewery, maybe 70 – 75 years old. The older Victorian-era brewery is a mile or two further south on Airport Way.

The 130 years is accurate – this was first known as the Bay View Brewery which was operational a year before Claussen-Sweenie Brewery in Georgetown which ran for a short time before it was closed by prohibition to never reopen. The Rainier Cold Storage building in Georgetown is commonly confused with the brewery in this article.

Also, Rainier as a beer brand emerged in 1892 to signify the consolidation of three brewery complexes in the area. But there has only ever been one Rainier Brewery – 3100 Airport Way South.

Lastly, the building is in no way in danger of being torn down. That’s just gossip journalism – no body educated would ever suggest such a remedy – it would make containments spread worse than ever.

    fyi – I live there.
