Beer In Ads #890: Enjoy Yourself, Enjoy Yourself

May 17, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Hampden Mild Ale, from the 1950s. Hamden Brewery was located in Massachusetts. I’m not sure that troubadour singing “Enjoy Yourself, Enjoy Yourself” from atop a beer barrel would make anyone want to drink their beer, but who knows. The tagline at the bottom is pretty interesting. “The First Truly Mild Ale in America.” I wonder who true that was?

    May a reader of this bit be old enough to have tasted that beer & still be competent enough to remember. Meanwhile – there’s a song of that era, recorded by the late Guy Lombardo entitled “Enjoy Yourself”, the chorus of which goes (I can’t remember the verses, which are “campy”-funny):

    Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think;
    Enjoy yourself, while you’re still in the pink.
    The years go by, as quickly as a wink;
    Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think.

    … which I am doing
