Tuesday’s ad is another one for Falstaff, also from 1964. It’s the second in an odd series of ads featuring a gorilla that Falstaff did that year. This one shows the gorilla playing the cello while next to her a bespectacled woman kneels, hands folded in her lap, next to a music stand with a pile of Falstaff beer cans in front of her.

I am reminded of Ernie Kovack’s Nairobi Trio. Even though the YouTube video has the Trio with drums, my vague (very old) memory has a version with a cello player.

Suurballe added an extra “k” to Kovacs’ name (he’s used to my nitpicking; we’ve been friends since the mid-80’s). However, Jay, no way in hell is that gorilla female (unless a female’s wearing the costume)! What I see is a bizarre take on the classic “American Gothic” painting.
