Beer In Ads #4233: Mary Austin Elected Miss Rheingold 1953!

October 14, 2022 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for “Rheingold Beer,” from 1952. This ad was made for the Rheingold Brewery, which was founded by the Liebmann family in 1883 in New York, New York. At its peak, it sold 35% of all the beer in New York state. In 1963, the family sold the brewery and in was shut down in 1976. In 1940, Philip Liebmann, great-grandson of the founder, Samuel Liebmann, started the “Miss Rheingold” pageant as the centerpiece of its marketing campaign. Beer drinkers voted each year on the young lady who would be featured as Miss Rheingold in advertisements. In the 1940s and 1950s in New York, “the selection of Miss Rheingold was as highly anticipated as the race for the White House.” The winning model was then featured in at least twelve monthly advertisements for the brewery, beginning in 1940 and ending in 1965. Beginning in 1941, the selection of next year’s Miss Rheingold was instituted and became wildly popular in the New York Area. In this ad, the new Miss Rheingold for next year is announced, with the headline: “Mary Austin Elected Miss Rheingold 1953!” I haven’t been able to find out very much about her, and there are some contradictions in what I did unearth. She was born in Flatbush, Brooklyn in 1921, and didn’t start modeling until she was thirty, in 1951. Before that, she worked at the National City Bank. According to a newspaper item in 1976, she married a Frank Fillen right after her Rheingold year and had seven kids, settling in Long Island. However, another more reputable account seems to suggest she married a Frances Xavier Killeen, but in 1950, but before her stint as Miss Rheingold. But the seven kids part seems true. But then I also found her obituary when she passed in 2012, and she appears to have later married a Philip Holden Fett, also on Long Island.

Below is a much larger, but black and white, version of the same ad:

Beer In Ads #4232: A Cartoon For Miss Rheingold 1953

Thursday’s ad is for “Rheingold Beer,” from 1952. This ad was made for the Rheingold Brewery, which was founded by the Liebmann family in 1883 in New York, New York. Beginning in 1941, the selection of next year’s Miss Rheingold was instituted and became wildly popular in the New York Area. After the over 700 aspiring models who registered for the contest, sixty were chosen in April to go to the next round. For that sixty, just six finalists are chosen and consumers are given an opportunity to cast their vote in the late summer and early fall. As an indicator of just how popular the Miss Rheingold campaign was, this is a cartoon by Robert J. Day that was published in the New Yorker magazine on September 20, 1952. In the cartoon, political speeches and being given for various candidates, the two we can see are both running for U.S. Senator, but in the bottom righthand corner, the orator there is stumping for votes for Mary Austin to become Miss Rheingold 1953. You can’t pay for that kind of advertising.

This is a small booklet, entitled “Election News For Rheingold Dealers,” that was created for Rheingold’s distributors and other retail partners. These are only some of the pages from it, but it’s enough to give a sense of it,. with at least a page for each of the six finalists. The pages I was able to find focused on finalist Helen Ryan but you can assume there was a similar page for each one of them.

The cover of the booklet.
A page showing available display pieces. This was probably a double-truck page, and this is the right hand side of it.
This is the profile page for Helen Ryan, but there was almost certainly a similar page for each of the six candidates.
The back cover of the booklet.
Here’s another slightly larger version of the booklet cover.
