Beer In Ads #3999: Miss Rheingold 1944 Goes Swimming

February 12, 2022 By Jay Brooks

Saturday’s ad is for “Rheingold Beer,” from 1944. This ad was made for the Rheingold Brewery, which was founded by the Liebmann family in 1883 in New York, New York. At its peak, it sold 35% of all the beer in New York state. In 1963, the family sold the brewery and in was shut down in 1976. In 1940, Philip Liebmann, great-grandson of the founder, Samuel Liebmann, started the “Miss Rheingold” pageant as the centerpiece of its marketing campaign. Beer drinkers voted each year on the young lady who would be featured as Miss Rheingold in advertisements. In the 1940s and 1950s in New York, “the selection of Miss Rheingold was as highly anticipated as the race for the White House.” The winning model was then featured in at least twelve monthly advertisements for the brewery, beginning in 1940 and ending in 1965. Beginning in 1941, the selection of next year’s Miss Rheingold was instituted and became wildly popular in the New York Area. Miss Rheingold 1944 was Jane House, and unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find out much about her apart from she was signed to Columbia pictures, so she at least had aspirations to be an actress. There is a Jane House listed on the iMDb, but doesn’t begin until she was on a television show in 1956, so I’m not sure if it’s the same person. In this ad, from August, she’s at a swimming pool, coming out of the pool, which is the shot they were photographing in yesterday’s ad.

Bistro Double IPA Winners 2022

February 12, 2022 By Jay Brooks

Earlier today, the 22nd annual Double IPA Festival was held at the Bistro in Hayward, California, and after a virtual fest last year, this year it was back to a more typical festival, complete with people and sunshine. I got there early for judging again this year, and instead of being sequestered in the dark, dank basement out of the view of the beautiful Bay Area sun — which is where we usually are — we were again outside under a large tent in what was a beautiful, sunny, hot day. We judged Double IPAs and Triple IPAs for most of the morning and part of the afternoon, before choosing our favorites in both categories.

It was hot and sunny throughout the festival this year.
A little after 2:00 PM, Vic announced the winners.

Double IPAs

  • 1st Place: There Does Not Exist Psychic Advisor
  • 2nd Place: Danville Brewing Chux Double IPA
  • 3rd Place: Russian River Pliny the Elder
  • Honorable Mention: Ghost Town Gallows Humor Double IPA
Russian River won three awards.
Danville Brewing won second place for their Double IPA, Chux.

Triple IPAs

  • 1st Place: Wondrous Triple Cuff
  • 2nd Place: Russian River Brewing Pliny the Younger
  • 3rd Place: Faction & Slice Collaboration Mounds of Green
  • Honorable Mention: Revision Dr. Lupulin
Wynn Whisenhunt from Wondrous Brewing accepting his 1st place award.

People’s Choice Awards

  • Double IPA: Wondrous Brewing LOADY
  • Triple IPA: Russian River Pliny the Younger
Vic and me.

Yep, it’s Rheingold Beer.

Beer In Ads #3995: Miss Rheingold 1944 As A Pilot

In this ad, from June, it’s a close-up of her climbing into a fighter plane to take off … or at least pretending to, that was shown further back in yesterday’s newspaper ad.

Here’s a larger version of the ad, but in black and white as it ran in the newspaper.

As a pilot, she suggests staying “on the beam,” and claims she stays on the beam by enjoying Rheingold beer.

In this ad, from May, she’s trying her hand at archery, and is pulling back on the arrow with the bow in her hands, a quiver on her belt. This is the shot they were trying to get in yesterday’s ad. And still using the tagline: “It’s beer as beer should taste.”

Beer In Ads #3992: Miss Rheingold 1944 Tries Archery

In this ad, from May, she’s trying her hand at archery, though I don’t think she’s hitting many bullseyes, “but she knows what hit’s the spot after a tough practice session.” If guessed the answer was “beer,” give yourself a point, but I love the text. “I head straight as an arrow for a glass of Rheingold.” I never noticed this before, but the tagline at the bottom seems just as relevant today. “It’s beer as beer should taste.”
