Beer In Ads #3372: Trappist Van Westmalle

June 5, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Westmalle, originally from maybe the 1940s or 50s, but this tin sign is a reproduction. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. This poster was created for the Westmalle Brewery, a Belgian Trappist brewery located at the Abdij Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van het Heilig Hart van Jezus in the Campine region of Belgium, and was founded in 1794, although they didn’t start brewing until 1836. The text reads. ” Trappist van Westmalle
Gebrouwen binnen de muren van de trappistenabdij,” which Google translates as “Trappist from Westmalle, Brewed within the walls of the Trappist Abbey.” I’m not sure who created this artwork.

Beer In Ads #3368: La Trappistine

June 1, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for La Trappistine, from 1897. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. This one was apparently created for a Trappist beer … maybe. Some websites where I’ve found do insist it was for a Trappist beer, but a least a few others think it was a liquor of some kind. Either way, it’s too cool not to share. The poster was created by famed Czech painter, illustrator and graphic artist, who lived in Paris during the Art Nouveau period, Alphonse Mucha. The original is at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Beer In Ads #3365: Among Friends We Drink Heineken

May 29, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Heineken, from maybe the 1960s. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. This one was created for Heineken, which was founded as De Hooiberg in 1592 in Amsterdam, in The Netherlands. The Heineken family bought the brewery and renamed it in 1864. The text at the top, “Entre amis on boit Heineken la bière de l’élite,” Google translates as “Among friends we drink Heineken the beer of the elite.” Since it mentions being imported in the text, as well, this was undoubtedly for sales in another country, but I’m not sure which one nor do I know who created this poster.
