Beerstrology Sign: Cancer

June 21, 2011 By Jay Brooks

zodiac
While I don’t put any stock in astrology, in 1980 Guinness put out a calendar with each month representing one of the zodiac signs, and I thought it would be fun to share these throughout the year.

Cancer, the crab, is from June 21-July 23. To learn more, see:

Guinness Ad #73: Guinness Golfing

June 18, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 73rd Guinness ad is again from the “Guinness For Strength” series, with a pair of golfers walking the links, but the one with the bottle of Guinness in this bag seems far more able to manage his large bag while his compatriot is struggling with not only a smaller bag but a wheeled cart. Since it looks likely that the U.S. Open will again be won by an Irish golfer, and in fact Northern Ireland, a golf ad seemed appropriate.

Guinness Ad #72: Fishing

June 11, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 72nd Guinness ad is again from the “Guinness For Strength” series, with a fisherman reeling in a whale-sized fish, presumably thanks to the pint of Guinness sitting next to his chair. The fish looks every bit as surprised, even a little scared, as the dog and the fisherman.

And here’s a slightly different variation of the ad.

Guinness Ad #71: Victory Gardening

June 4, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 71st Guinness ad is also from the “Guinness For Strength” series, with the yield of vegetables a direct result of the bottle of Guinness peeking out of the basket the gardener is carrying on his head. Now that’s a green thumb.

Guinness-veggies

And here’s a variation of the ad, presumably from just after World War 2, since the word “victory” is crossed-out and “plenty” written in just above it.

Guinness Ad #70: Sheep Pyramid

May 28, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 70th Guinness ad is from the “Guinness For Strength” stable, the strength in this one is the ability to carry sixteen sheep on your back after downing a pint of Guinness.

Beerstrology Sign: Gemini

Guinness Ad #69: Life Is Brighter After Guinness

May 21, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 69th Guinness ad is a fairly simple one, showing a half-empty pint of Guinness and the slogan “Life Is Brighter After Guinness” in large letters followed by the more familiar “Guinness is Good For You” in smaller print below that.

Guinness Ad #68: Guinness — Him Strong

May 14, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 68th Guinness ad is an another odd one, the second from a time when sensitivities toward Native Americans weren’t particularly high. Using for a second time the cringeworthy tagline “— Him Strong,” this one shows not the iconic Toucan but a smiling group of Native Americans sitting in a canoe being held up by, presumably, the chief, who has a bottle of Guinness tucked into his pouch.

And here’s a second ad of the same scene, but from a different angle.

Guinness Ad #67: The Guinness Guide To English Cheese

May 7, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 67th Guinness ad, in honor of the Great Online Beer & Cheese-Off yesterday, is a poster Guinness did in 1965 showing a variety of English cheese with the tagline “Guinness goes well with food.”

They also made a metal sign of the cheese poster, as well, though with a different tagline. In the metal version, it’s “— And Guinness enhance the flavor.” The cheeses, too, are almost the same, but not exactly, plus their order is changed up.

Guinness Ad #66: See What Big Chief Toucan Can Do

April 30, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 66th Guinness ad is an odd one, obviously from a time when sensitivities toward Native Americans weren’t particularly high. That cringeworthy tagline “— Him Strong,” while obviously referring to Guinness, nonetheless seems wrong by today’s standards. And it’s not helped by the iconic Toucan wearing the headdress with the slogan “See What Big Chief Toucan Can Do.” Still, it was a different time.
