Beer In Ads #964: El Toro Bravo

August 28, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Schlitz Malt Liquor, from — guessing by the pull-tab — around the 1960s or early 70s. The bull logo and the skirt design around the bottom look positively Aztec. But the bull in the ad, he just looks mad.

Beer In Ads #943: Raiders Of The Schlitzbox

July 30, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Schlitz, from the 1950s. It’s probably part of their “Schlitzerland” ad campaign, with this one focusing on the refrigerator, renamed here the “Schlitzbox,” back when people still referred to it as the icebox.

Beer In Ads #925: I Was Curious About Model Trains

July 5, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad for Schlitz, from 1949. It’s from their long-running “I was curious …” series, that featured three-panel stories that always ended with people drinking Schlitz beer. This one features a younger couple visiting the home of an older one, with the older man showing off his model train layout … and, of course, his superior taste in beer.

Beer In Ads #917: Fishing For Beer Cans

June 25, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1953. Showing a couple fishing a river, the woman is on the bank fishing a can of Schlitz out of a picnic basket to tempt the man out of the water. Perhaps it’s time to create the scene in the inset, frying up the fish.

Beer In Ads #915: That Man — He’s Done It Again!

June 21, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1950. In the wonderful illustration, it appears that a woman has discovered that her husband has emptied the refrigerator of food and filled it with Schlitz beer. Surveying the scene with a new bag of groceries on the table, not to mention other food scattered about the kitchen, all she can do is exclaim. “That Man — He’s Done It Again!”

Beer In Ads #901: You’ll Love The Difference!

June 3, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1961. Showing a woman wearing too much makeup, and a party dress, lying in a hammock with a mug of beer, with a curious rhombohedron drawn around the can of Schlitz. I”m not even sure why.

Beer In Ads #896: It’s The Little Extras

May 27, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1951. It’s an odd ad, showing “the little “extras’ that make Schlitz the best-liked beer in history,” a claim that’s awfully hard to prove. But those extras? Those are easier. It’2 1) extra clarity, 2) extra freshness, and 3) that extra clean taste.

Beer In Ads #891: Good Living At The Beach

May 20, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Schlitz, from the 1955. It’s one of their “Know the real joy of good living …” series of ads, shows a couple at the beach, though they don’t actually look anywhere near sand or a spot where they could get onto the water. All I see are high, rocky cliffs. Maybe that’s why, despite the towel around his neck, they’re both bone dry.

Beer In Ads #885: If You Love Beer, You’ll Love This Red Hat

May 10, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1952. It uses their popular “If you love beer … you’ll love Schlitz” mantra that graced so many of their ads. But this one seems slightly odder. For example, I don’t quite get the animated discussion that appears to be centering on that red hunting cap. But perhaps more interesting is the bottom left corner, where they’re attempting to teach consumers that brown bottles protect beer better. And I thought that was a new tactic.

Beer In Ads #881: Keeping Score

May 6, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1959. It’s from their “Know the real joy of good living …” series, and shows a couple at a golf course. The woman is trying to write down her score on the scorecard , but she looks distracted by the shiny beer that the man is holding up. He almost looks like he’s trying to hypnotize her with beer. “You’re getting sleepy ….”
