Beer In Ads #2733: Unexpected Barbecue

August 15, 2018 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Michelob, one of the brands created by Anheuser-Busch as a draft-only beer in 1896. It was first packaged in 1961, and its distinctive teardrop bottle won a design award the following year. But that was replaced in 1967 “for efficiency in the production line,” but reverted to a traditional bottle in 2002. This ad is from 1971, and features a can and mug of Michelob next to a grill cooking barbecues spareribs. This ad is actually a page-and-a-half, with a half-page portion that’s unfolded to reveal the whole ad, though I’m not sure what’s on the other side.

Beer In Ads #2732: Unexpected Hamburgers

August 14, 2018 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Michelob, one of the brands created by Anheuser-Busch as a draft-only beer in 1896. It was first packaged in 1961, and its distinctive teardrop bottle won a design award the following year. But that was replaced in 1967 “for efficiency in the production line,” but reverted to a traditional bottle in 2002. This ad is from 1970, and features a bottle and mug of Michelob next to a plate containing a hamburger and a few chips. What could be more unexpected than a hamburger and a beer?

Beer In Ads #2731: Next Fishing Trip

August 13, 2018 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Michelob, one of the brands created by Anheuser-Busch as a draft-only beer in 1896. It was first packaged in 1961, and its distinctive teardrop bottle won a design award the following year. But that was replaced in 1967 “for efficiency in the production line,” but reverted to a traditional bottle in 2002. This ad is from 1970, and features three cans of Michelob caught in a fishing net, with one of the beers poured into a mug. I think there’s a lure next to the net, possibly the one used to catch the beer.

Beer In Ads #2726: Do Something A Little Wild

August 8, 2018 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Michelob, one of the brands created by Anheuser-Busch as a draft-only beer in 1896. It was first packaged in 1961, and its distinctive teardrop bottle won a design award the following year. But that was replaced in 1967 “for efficiency in the production line,” but reverted to a traditional bottle in 2002. This ad is from 1970, and features a bottle and mug of Michelob, surrounded by a deck of cards with a few Jokers visible in what looks like a double-deck. The other thing that stands out is that this is an unusual deck of cards, not a standard one, based on the pips I can see. But to be fair, it’s all 2’s and Jokers.

Beer In Ads #2725: Do Unto Others …

August 7, 2018 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Michelob, one of the brands created by Anheuser-Busch as a draft-only beer in 1896. It was first packaged in 1961, and its distinctive teardrop bottle won a design award the following year. But that was replaced in 1967 “for efficiency in the production line,” but reverted to a traditional bottle in 2002. This ad is from 1970, and features two bottles of Michelob, one full and one empty, sitting on a Welcome mat. The empty bottle was obviously emptied into a mug, and there’s also a Michelob bottle opener left on the mat. I guess the idea is you should leave beer on the doorstep of a new neighbor, which on the surface seems neighborly, although I’m not actually seeing a door, so who knows.

Beer In Ads #2724: If Michelob Were A Ghost …

August 6, 2018 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Michelob, one of the brands created by Anheuser-Busch as a draft-only beer in 1896. It was first packaged in 1961, and its distinctive teardrop bottle won a design award the following year. But that was replaced in 1967 “for efficiency in the production line,” but reverted to a traditional bottle in 2002. This ad is from 1970, and features a bottle of Michelob dressed as a ghost for Halloween. The punchline, or at least the answer to the tagline, is “all the other spirits would be out of business.” Funny. Not true, but funny.
