Saturday’s ad is for Schlitz, from the 1950s. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, a trio of couples are on a camping trip. They’ve got a roaring fire going and are starting to cool, “A real Adventure in Good Living.” Luckily, they’ve got a bucket of beer, too.

It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, a presumably Italian chef declares “Ah-h — just ze kiss of ze hops.”

Thursday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1945. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, a woman in her kitchen is calling out the window to tell her husband that dinner is ready. Behind her, the table is set and there’s a bottle of Schlitz and a beer glass set on the table in anticipation. Because “Today more than ever when men are working especially hard, a bottle of Schlitz brings welcome relaxation at the end of the day.”

Beer In Ads #2419: Memories Of A Kiss

Wednesday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1947. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, they show a poster of another Schlitz ad from the year before hanging on the wall, while an architect — or maybe draftsman? — stares at it longingly. I sure hope he doesn’t start kissing it, it’d probably be better if he out and got himself a beer.

Beer In Ads #2418: Mellowed Goodness …

Tuesday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1946. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, they show the process for getting hop flavor into beer. Apparently, it’s all done in a land of giants, who pick ginormous hop cones from the bines and shove them into large bottles outside under a hot sun, preferably right in the field by the farm.

Beer In Ads #2417: Just The Kiss Of The Hops Again

Monday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1942. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, another headless woman is puckering up to kiss a few cones of hops, although it looks just as likely that she’s about to blow on them for good luck. Similar to yesterday’s ad, except that this woman has black hair.

It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, the disembodied head of a woman is puckering up to kiss a few cones of hops, although it looks just as likely that she’s about to blow on them for good luck.

Beer In Ads #2262: Over A Million Barrels A Year

Sunday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1903. In the first decade of the 20th century, Schlitz Brewing, then one of the largest breweries in the U.S. after the industry had shrunk from over 4,000 to around 1,500 in just 25 or so years, did a series of primarily text ads, with various themes. In this ad, Schlitz is explaining that the reason they brew “Over a Million Barrels a Year” is — you probably guessed — their “absolute purity.” That’s also why they “doubled the necessary cost of our brewing to have Schlitz Beer right.”

Beer In Ads #2261: Doctors Say Drink More Schlitz

Saturday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1904. In the first decade of the 20th century, Schlitz Brewing, then one of the largest breweries in the U.S. after the industry had shrunk from over 4,000 to around 1,500 in just 25 or so years, did a series of primarily text ads, with various themes. In this ad, Schlitz recounts how you need to drink “ten glasses of fluid per day,” and that most people don’t drink enough. So what, you may be asking yourself. But not enough fluids means “too little to flush the body of its waste. The result is bad blood, nervousness, disease.” That’s why “the doctor says ‘Drink more.”

Beer In Ads #2260: Purity Is Free

Friday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1902. In the first decade of the 20th century, Schlitz Brewing, then one of the largest breweries in the U.S. after the industry had shrunk from over 4,000 to around 1,500 in just 25 or so years, did a series of primarily text ads, with various themes. In this ad, one of the earliest in the series, Schlitz is already talking about their purity, and what it means. In a nutshell, they’re saying they spend more on their process to insure it’s pure but sell it for the same price. What nice people to take a cut in their profits. “Not a beverage known to man is more healthful than beer, if it’s pure.”
