Monday’s ad is for Carlsberg, from the 1940s, sometime during World War 2. In this Danish ad, apparently they abandoned their old label because it contained associations to the Nazis with the religious form of a swastika, and instead advertised a more modern (for the time) look. But I do love the bottleheads and the personifications of each type of beer.
Sunday’s ad is for Carlsberg, from 1972. In this U.S. ad, three of the beers Carlsberg imported at the time include Gold Label, Special Dark Lager and Elephant Malt Liquor. The tagline, “Two out of three Carlsbergs are great beers,” followed by (in smaller print), “the other is a great something else altogether.” I’m not sure I quite understand that, but why not. Also, for three bucks, you could send in and get six of the glasses in the ad.
Friday’s ad is for Carlsberg, from around 1868. This cool advertising poster of the Carlsberg brewery, or Carlsberg Bryggerier, was created by J.L. Sivertseri (at least that what the name appears to be). I love these idealized portraits of breweries that were so common in the late 19th century.
Thursday’s ad is for Carlsberg, from 1961. One of a series of “Quaffmanship” ads, this one features the Traveling Quaffer, a man riding the back of an airplane and a long story about what that means. But I like the simple, minimalist line drawing, a common style of cartoons during that time period.
Wednesday’s ad is for Carlsberg, from 1926. IN this old advertising painting, a worker holding a mug of beer looks at the audience while directing our attention behind him at the Carlsberg brewery complex in Copenhagen. Above him, the text reads “Gamle den er god giver Kraft og Mod,” which Google clumsily translates to “Old is good gives strength and courage.”

Monday’s ad is for Carlsberg, and is done by famed fantasy and science fiction artist Frank Frazetta in 1985. Using the tagline “I Told You Not To Touch My Carlsberg,” the painting suggests the carnage that might ensue should someone decide to “touch” his beer. There’s another slogan at the bottom of the ad, “Denmark’s Greatest Export Since the Vikings,” which may explain why they chose this work by Frazetta.
Sunday’s ad is for Carlsberg, advertising for the James Bond movie, the Living Daylights, which premiered July 31, 1987. In the ad, a torso in a tuxedo is pouring a glass of Carlsberg for himself, while a pair of female hands caress the man. He’s obviously meant to be James Bond, and the ad carries the tagline “He’s dangerous and he takes chances. Except when it comes to his beer.”
Saturday’s ad is entitled Dad Rehearses His Speech, and the illustration was done in 1956 by Douglass Crockwell. It’s #119 in a series entitled “Home Life in America,” also known as the Beer Belongs series of ads that the United States Brewers Foundation ran from 1945 to 1956. This is the final ad in the series. In this ad, Dad Rehearses His Speech while his wife and kids have to endure hearing it for the umpteenth time. I assume the beer must be helping.
Friday’s ad is entitled Do-It-Yourself Decorators, and the illustration was done in 1956 by Pruett Carter. It’s #118 in a series entitled “Home Life in America,” also known as the Beer Belongs series of ads that the United States Brewers Foundation ran from 1945 to 1956. In this ad, two couples are Do-It-Yourself Decorators and appear to be fans of artist Piet Mondrian. Because it looks like they’re following one of his paintings and using to make a rug matching it. How much beer have they been drinking?
