Beer In Ads #3405: Royal Hunt Stout

July 10, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Royal Hunt Stout, from 1930. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. I wasn’t able to figure out what brewery this poster was created for other than every source seems to agree it was for a Belgian brewery. I don’t know who the artist is who created this poster.

Beer In Ads #3405: Brigitte Bardot For Real Ixelberg

July 9, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Real Ixelberg, from 1967. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. This poster was created for the Grande Brasserie de Koekelberg, sort of, which was founded in 1886 in Koekelberg, which is one of the nineteen municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region in Belgium. But in 1954, it merged with the Grandes Brasseries d’Ixelles, and the merged company was called Brasseries de Koekelberg et d’Ixelles, though it was generally referred to as Ixelberg in advertising to consumers. This poster was created by Belgian artist Rob Otten and features French actress Brigitte Bardot in one of her few commercial endorsements.

Beer In Ads #3405: Real Ixelberg

July 8, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Real Ixelberg, from the 1960s. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. Beer In Ads #3404: Biere de Mars

July 7, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Biere de Mars, from who knows when, though it looks like the late 1800s. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. I have no clue who this poster was created for, there’s no brewery or other organization information on it. I also don’t know who created this poster, though it appears to be signed in the middle, it’s too small to make out the name. Also, what does playing cards have to do with the beer?

Beer In Ads #3403: Fort-Op High Fermentation

July 6, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Fort-Op, from maybe the 1950s. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. This poster was created for Brewery Meiresonne, or Brouwerij De Hoprank, which was located Landegem, which used to be part of the Belgian municipality of Nevele in the province of East Flanders, Belgium. The brewery was founded 1871 by August Meiresonne. When the Germans destroyed the brewery during their retreat in 1918, the brewery was rebuilt in Ghent. In 1964 it was acquired by Artois (later Interbrew then InBev), who demolished all traces of the brewery in 1985. I don’t know who created this poster.

Sign Up Now For The Brookston Hitting Derby

July 6, 2020 By Jay Brooks

I confess I almost forgot about the shortened 60-game baseball season starting on Thursday. I’d set up the annual Brookston Hitting Derby, but promptly forgot about it again. We used to call it a Home Run Derby because to keep things simpler, we only counted those, but more recently I monkeyed with the scoring (because I generally can’t keep well enough alone) so while it’s still simpler than being in a full-blown fantasy baseball league, there are now more ways to get points. Still, we do it just for fun, and there are twenty spaces available if you want to play along, although we only need four to draft (one more now). But hurry up, the league will draft late tomorrow or Wednesday since the season starts on Thursday, so sign up today or tomorrow if you want to join.

In order to join the league, follow this link, and I think that’s all you have to do, other then follow the on-screen instructions. If that’s not right, or you’re having trouble, leave a comment below and a way to reach you. Otherwise, see you on the diamond.

Beer In Ads #3402: Gueuze Becasse

July 5, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Sunday’s ad is for Gueuze Becasse, from maybe the 1920s. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. This poster was created for Bécasse-Steppé, which was located in Anderlecht, which is one of the 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium. “Originally a café blender, the café A La Bécasse was founded 1877 in Brussels by Henri Steppé. The beer company was founded by François Prosper Steppé and owned independently until acquired by Belle-Vue in 1952. Later it was owned by Brabrux in 1972, and by Interbrew in 1992. The café A La Bécasse is still independently family-owned by the 3rd generation of the Steppé family.” I don’t know who created this poster.

Beer In Ads #3401: Meibier

July 4, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Saturday’s ad is for Meibier, from probably the 1950s. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. This poster was created for the Bierbrouwerij De Hoop, which was located in Budel, which is a village in the Dutch province of Noord Braban. The brewery was founded in 1870 by Gerardus Arts and is still owned by the same family today, although at some point they changed the name of the brewery tot Budelse Brouwerij. I don’t know who created this poster.

Beer In Ads #3400: Your Smile … Is The Crown At Work!

July 3, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Bink, from probably the 1950s. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. This poster was created for the Brouwerij Kerkom, which was located in Kerkom-bij-Sint-Truiden, usually just known more simply as Kerkom, which is in the south of the province of Limburg, Belgium. The brewery was founded in 1878 by Evarist Clerinx. The text at the top, “Uwen glimlach … is den kroon op onsch work!” Google translates as “Your smile … is the crown at work!” But I especially love the text at the bottom, “De ziel van vroeger met de smaak van nu,” which means “The soul of the past with the taste of today.” I don’t know who created this poster.

Beer In Ads #3399: Menelik Bier

July 2, 2020 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Menelik Bier, from probably the 1920s or a little later. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year and will continue to do so in 2020. This poster was created for the Brouwerij Anglo-Belge, which was located in the East Flemish municipality of Zulte, Belgium. The brewery was founded in 1891 by Alfred Versele and Ernest Martens, but in 1979 was bought by the French group BSN, which then owned the Kronenbourg Brewery, who closed the brewery in 1989. The beer is named for Menelik I, who was “the first Solomonic Emperor of Ethiopia, [and] is traditionally believed to be the son of King Solomon of ancient Israel and Makeda, ancient Queen of Sheba. He is alleged to have ruled around 950 BC, according to traditional sources. Tradition credits him with bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Ethiopia, following a visit to Jerusalem to meet his father upon reaching adulthood.” The poster was created by Belgian artist J. D’Heedene.
