Beer In Ads #2885: Bière De L’Espérance

January 25, 2019 By Jay Brooks

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 3993724870_6a0224e391.jpg

Friday’s ad is for Bière De l’Espérance, from 1920. From the late 1800s until the 1940s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster is for Brasserie de l’Espérance (which means “Brewery of Hope”), a French brewery founded in 1746, near the town of Strasbourg, in the Alsace region of Eastern France.

Thursday’s ad is for Birra Livorno, from possibly the late 1890s, though it could be from as late as the 1920s. From the late 1800s until the 1940s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster is for Birra Livorno, an Italian brewery founded in 1893. Livorno is a port city on the Ligurian Sea on the western coast of Tuscany, Italy.

I also found this second image of the poster showing very different colors.

Wednesday’s ad is for Orval, from 1931, though some sources say it’s from the 1920s. From the late 1800s until the 1940s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster is for Orval, though I’m not sure who the artist was that created it.

Tuesday’s ad is for Croix De Lorraine, from the 1920s or 30s, I think. I don’t really know. From the late 1800s until the 1940s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster is for Kreusbrau’s Croix De Lorraine, which means the Cross of Lorraine.

Monday’s ad is for Bieres Georges, from 1930, I think. From the late 1800s until the 1940s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster is for Brasserie Georges, which was a brewery in Lyon, France opened in 1836 by Georges Hoffherr. The imagery, of course, is St. George slaying the dragon.

Beer In Ads #2880: Brasserie Flad Albi

January 20, 2019 By Jay Brooks

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 3993724870_6a0224e391.jpg

Sunday’s ad is for Brasserie Flad Albi, from the late 1800s, I think. From the late 1800s until the 1940s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster is for Brasserie Flad Albi, which was a brewery in Albi, a town located in southern France. It was founded in 1822, and closed in 1964. I’m not sure when the poster was created, but one of the bridges depicted was built in 1866, so it must after that. It’s also an early example of being meta since the man (Gambrinus?) sitting by the keg is holding up a bottle with a picture of him on the label.

Beer In Ads #2878: Vejle Pilsner

January 18, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Vejle Pilsner, from 1920. From the late 1800s until the 1940s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster is for Vejle Pilsner, a beer from Bryggeriet Vejle, in Denmark. It was founded in 1858, but acquired in 1898 by Østjyske Bryggerier. I think the poster is from before the merger, but I’m not certain. Google translates the text at the bottom to “it must have father,” so it’s probably something like “My father must have this.”

Beer In Ads #2876: Birra Venezia

January 16, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Birra Venezia, from 1926. From the late 1800s until the 1940s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster is for Birra Venezia, or beers of Venice, Italy. It was created by French commercial artist Achille Mauzan for his agency, Mauzan-Morzenti.

It appears they created a second one, too, that’s almost exactly the same except for what the man on top of the table pouring beers is wearing. The signature is slightly different, too, listing Mauzan’s agency rather than Mauzan himself.
