Our 68th Guinness ad is an another odd one, the second from a time when sensitivities toward Native Americans weren’t particularly high. Using for a second time the cringeworthy tagline “— Him Strong,” this one shows not the iconic Toucan but a smiling group of Native Americans sitting in a canoe being held up by, presumably, the chief, who has a bottle of Guinness tucked into his pouch.
And here’s a second ad of the same scene, but from a different angle.
Friday’s ad is the last for Quilmes, from 1968, and it certainly looks like quite a party. Love the hairstyles.
Thursday’s ad is for Quilmes Cristal, and is on some kind of parchment, or at least paper made to look that way. I don’t actually know how old it is, but it looks old, or perhaps again it was made to look that way.
Wednesday’s ad is a modern Quilmes poster, a beautiful image of the beer on, perhaps, cloud nine, with the sun behind it and trees and balloons circling the bottle.
Tuesday’s ad is another one for Quilmes, probably also from around the 1920s or 30s. It was for their light-colored Cristal. I saw an original of this beautiful sign last night in the home of one of Argentina’s most prominent breweriana collectors. His home was amazing, literally filled with beer collectibles from all over the world, but with a special emphasis on local Argentinian beer.
Monday’s ad is for a South American beer, since I’ll be in Argentina all week, judging at the South Beer Cup. It’s for Quilmes, perhaps Argentina’s best known brand around the world. The ad is from around the 1920s and features a painting of three women with different color hair, one for each of the Quilmes beers.
Our 67th Guinness ad, in honor of the Great Online Beer & Cheese-Off yesterday, is a poster Guinness did in 1965 showing a variety of English cheese with the tagline “Guinness goes well with food.”
They also made a metal sign of the cheese poster, as well, though with a different tagline. In the metal version, it’s “— And Guinness enhance the flavor.” The cheeses, too, are almost the same, but not exactly, plus their order is changed up.
Friday’s ads are for a Brazilian beer (where I’m heading next week) from Primo Schincariol. The brand of beer is Nobel and this series of ads is from 2008 and uses the slogan “Appetizers Are Just An Excuse.” Each ad shows a beer glass filled not with beer, but two appetizers that, from a distance, make it look like the glass is full of beer. The first, given that today is the beer and cheese Session, is filled with cheese and eggs.
A second shows French Fries — my favorite — in the bottom with white onions on top.
And a third uses popcorn, both popped and unpopped.
There were at least two more of these ads, peanuts and cashews, which you can see at Coloribus.
Thursday’s ads are for Carling Black Label, both featuring beer and cheese. The first, which appeared in Life magazine in April of 1963. Nice to see even that far back someone was putting cheese and beer together.
The second appeared in a June 1962 issue of Life, and featured a different cheese. Both are part of their series using the slogan “People like it.”
Wednesday’s ad is for the third, and last, one of Anheuser-Busch’s series of beers they marketed under the name “American Originals,” beginning in the fall of 1995. This one was Muenchener, a “Munich Style Amber.” Here’s what a press release said about it at the time:
Muenchener was first brewed in 1893 — and called “Columbian Muenchener” at the time — after Adolphus Busch challenged his brewmasters to develop the world’s best muenchener-style beer. Until then, the world’s best muenchener beers were brewed in Munich, Germany, but Busch set out to change that. His brewmasters succeeded, and Busch’s Columbian Muenchener was awarded a gold medal at the 1893 Columbian World’s Exposition in Chicago.
Muenchener is a medium-to-full bodied beer with a deep, copper color. It possesses a rich, creamy and roasted malt flavor, and its aroma is malty, with a light roast and spice characteristic.
“In brewing Muenchener, we use five varieties of malt, including Munich-style malt and other roasted barley malts, as well as a blend of seven domestic and imported hops,” Kahn said.
