Beer In Ads #284: A Bud Can Sandwich

January 7, 2011 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Friday’s ad is a 1969 Budweiser ad showing a can of their beer in between a hero sandwich, with the slogan “The Great American Hero for the Great American Hero.” I’m not sure I’d want to bite into that sandwich, I’d be afraid I’d lose a tooth. Or it might taste metallic.

Beer In Ads #274: Budweiser, Something More Than Beer …

December 27, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Monday’s holiday ad is for Budweiser from 1950 and features a Santa-like chef with a bounteous feast of meats and seafood, along with fruits and cheese. The slogan for that ad is “Something more than beer … A tradition in hospitality.” It originally ran in Life magazine’s Christmas issue for 1950.

The Santa-like chef image had been used before, in this 1947 ad about “Help Yourself to Good Taste.”

Beer In Ads #263: Christmas Bud Break

December 13, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Monday’s holiday ad is for Budweiser, from 1949. A couple takes a break from putting up the Christmas tree for a sandwich and a Budweiser. Frankly, it doesn’t look they’ve done enough work yet to warrant a break but perhaps it’s not so much a break as their way of drinking the whole time they put up their decorations.

A Chanukah Whassup

December 1, 2010 By Jay Brooks

hanukkah
With Chanukah a.k.a. Hanukkah beginning this evening at sundown, I thought I’d share this gem, a spoof of the popular Budweiser Whassup spots from a few years ago, though they were actually called “True,” at least internally. The original is below in case you want to remind yourself what they’re spoofing. L’Chiam.

Beer In Ads #245: Budweiser’s The Tavern

November 17, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Wednesday’s ad is from 1963 and is Budweiser’s depiction of “The Tavern … a friendly spot.” Don’t you miss the days when all bartenders wore those red half jackets? And a tavern with only two people in it? That’s got to be a great place to talk about “bowling, baseball or city hall.”

Beer In Ads #240: Bud, You Have To See It To Believe It

November 10, 2010 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Budweiser from 1948. It depicts a very colorful, surreal circus scene with the slogan “You Have To See It To Believe It.”

Beer In Ads #239: Bud Beach Sipping

November 9, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Tuesday’s ad is for Budweiser from 1958. It’s from the “Where There’s Life … There’s Bud” series and features a couple at the beach. The man is pouring beer from a can to overflowing — tilt the glass, dude! — while the woman tries to sip it up before it spills over the side, while holding a partially-eaten sandwich. Is it just me, or is there something vaguely odd about the ad?

Beer In Ads #228: When You Know Your Beer …

October 29, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
With the World Series and baseball ads plus Halloween this weekend, I’m doubling up on beer ads so I can also highlight a few Halloween-themed ones. The first of these is a Budweiser ad from 1953 featuring a truly scary mask and a witch holding up a glass of beer to toast a jack-o-lantern along with the tagline “When you know your beer … it’s bound to be Bud.

Beer In Ads #212: Pick A Pack Of Bud Suits

October 8, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Friday’s ad is another for Budweiser, from 1972. The tagline is “Pick a Pair of Six-Packs” and the ad features a pair of blonds holding a six-packs above their heads. But it’s their outfits that really make the ad; bell bottoms with Bud labels, bare midriffs and white shirts with another Bud label over each breast pocket. Oh, and a red sash tied around their waist. Behind them is a five-piece band in a male version of the same getup. Classic.

October 7, 2010 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Budweiser, from 1956. It’s part of their “Where There’s Life … there’s Budweiser” campaign and features a great illustration of a dinner party scene through a glass of beer.
