Monday’s ad is yet another one for Falstaff, also from 1950s. In this ad, a man is fishing on the shore of the ocean (or, I suppose, a very big lake) with the tagline “Falstaff goes fishin’ from coast to coast.” I’m not sure they made their case.
Beer In Ads #1565: When Picnicking Gives You A Thirst For Beer …
Sunday’s ad is another one for Falstaff, this one also from 1950s. In this ad, a well-dressed couple is having a waterside picnic. But they brought a fairly large, and undoubtedly heavy, red cooler filled with ice and Falstaff cans. But it’s all big smiles now as the man is opening a beer, but without watching what he’s doing, as if he was doing a magic trick.
Beer In Ads #1564: After The Game …
Saturday’s ad is still another one for Falstaff, this one from 1950s. Yesterday’s ad copy, “When it’s Time to Watch the Ball Game … Bring on the Falstaff,” was for before and during the game, whereas this ad is about “After the Game.” It’s quite a spread they’ve put out, but what the hell are those things on the football field serving platter? Are they deviled eggs wearing uniforms? And check out the guy in the background. “Put down the pillow.”
Beer In Ads #1563: When It’s Time To Watch The Ball Game …
Beer In Ads #1562: Man Size Pleasure Of Golf
Thursday’s ad is another one for Falstaff, also from 1959. Today is National Golf Day, so this ad seemed appropriate for today’s featured ad. Like yesterday’s ad, the copy asks. “Got A Thirst For Man Size Pleasure?” I guess golf is slightly manlier than ice skating, but I’m still not convinced it’s among the more physically demanding sports one associates with manly pursuits. Although I suppose it does take balls to play.
Beer In Ads #1561: Man Size Pleasure Of Skating
Wednesday’s ad is for Falstaff, from 1959. “Got A Thirst For Man Size Pleasure?” You must be an ice skater. I know ice skating is hard, and I sucked at it both of the times I’ve tried it, but it’s still difficult to think of associating it with manliness, especially after seeing ice skating in the Olympics.
Beer In Ads #1544: This Family Brews Beer Better
Sunday’s ad is for Falstaff, from 1970. Featuring soul singer James Brown, whose birthday is today. He did an ad for Falstaff in which he’s shown belting out a song in a dozen sequential photos on a black background. Below there’s a simple photos of a glass of Falstaff beer with a can next to it and the interesting tagline “This family brews beer better.”
Beer In Ads #1539: This Is The One For Gardening
Tuesday’s ad is for Falstaff, from 1963. Part of a series of ads from the early 1960s (see, for example Beer In Ads #225: Falstaff, This Is The One) in which they feature the slogan “For your Light-hearted moments … This Is The One.” One note, you may think that’s a bottle of Falstaff he’s holding, but it’s referred to as a “handy Glass Can.”
Beer In Ads #1454: Light-Hearted Living
Monday’s ad is for Falstaff, from what looks to be the 1950s or early 1960s, when bowling still was king. Two couples locked in a bowling struggle, intently watching … what, she still has the ball in her hand and yet they’re all looking down the lane. I especially love how the next round, all four bottles on that tray, are perfectly displayed with their labels facing out. That is impressive.
Beer In Ads #1428: Read Our New Label
Wednesday’s ad is for Falstaff, from 1969. I’m not sure what the label looked like before the sixties ended, but the new one is what I remember, a logo and a short story. Notice in parenthesis at the bottom it states “(This family brews beer better),” a bold claim indeed. But then I have to ask, why focus on the new label first?
